Black oiley looking substance?

Hello all, I finally got my lower unit back on and tested it in the water. The good news is that it shifted both into forward and reverse. The bad news is it stalled the motor in forward. The river is still closed because of the flooding here in norther Illinois and the boat was still on the trailer. Could it be that that was just too much torque for the motor to over come? The second question is now a day later I have a pool of what looks like motor oil under the lower unit???? In line 6 Mercury. It does not look like gear lube.

Any ideas?

If you were idling for a while and the engine was running a bit rich, what you see is probably fuel residue.

I did idle for about 10 minuets, is that a long time?

Smell of the oily substance. Gear lube is very destinctive, sulphur smell.
