View Full Version : Getting outboards up on plane

I made some progress on my non-starting port motor, found that 4 of the 6 fuel enrichener solenois were just pouring out raw fuel. After a few passes at cleaning I got them to seal like they should.

Next on the agenda, since it seemed to actually be running (although the port motor still seems to smoke more, so may have the oil injector to look at next), was to take it out for a short test run. Did pretty good up till about 3500 RPM, then I kept having the stbd prop blow out and the motor rev to 4000+. Guess I need some more practice/training on dealing with high mounted motors as I've been spoiled by the 4-blades and deep running TRS drives from the Formula.

So, what is the best method to get a twin outboard up on plane. Do I just power through the blow-out, or feather the throttles and try again. Motors sounded like they were serging as I tried to accelerate through, but I think they may have just been unhooking as it went over some wakes.

When the bow drops and you experience the blow out atleast in my experience it is best to get out of the throttles for a split second, let the props hook back up and then you can get back on it. But this was also on a single engine v hull so I am unsure on twins on a cat??
I wouldnt suggest powering through it fearing overreving but 4000+ isnt that high for a 2 stroke, when you get to redline then I'd be concerned, but try to feather the throttles after the boat drops on plane.

Got it going a little better today and got it up on plane and crusing a little, I think the stbd motor was trimmed out more than the port yesterday (trim indicators don't work, just one more thing on the new boat fix-it list). I also put the tabs down to get it going which probably helped.

Now the problem is the port motor won't pull over 3500-3700 RPM, the stbd easily throttles over 4000 (as far as I pushed it). Looks like I've got some more junk in the port fuel system that I didn't get cleaned out (removed major trash getting the enrichening solenoids to stop leaking all the time, which was causing my hot-start problem) so I'm sure there is something still in a jet that's causing my problems. Didn't want to try to run it anymore till I can get someone out to do a proper carb rebuild and sync (don't think I'm ready to sync 6 carbs myself) as I don't want to run it lean and hurt something.
