WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A 3 LITRE MERC 225 XRI AND A 3 LITRE MERC 225 EFI. IS IT ONLY A NAME CHANGE OR ARE THERE MODIFICATIONS AND UPGRADES ON THE XRI MOTORS? IF SO, WHAT ARE THEY?

Just a name change. All the same inside.

HEY TONY, WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BEST UPGRADES THAT CAN BE DONE TO THIS MOTOR WHILE KEEPING THE RELIABILITY FACTOR HIGH?

Check out http://brucatosvs.com/3litre.html for information on the Brucato SVS and High Flow Reed Plate for that motor.
If you've got the early style 3 litre 225 with only 2 butterflies in the airbox, we can add 31 HP with just the SVS!!!! and another 8 HP with the High Flow Reed Plate.

The SVS system for that motor works on a progressive linkage and only operates above 80% throttle position. You can still retain your oil injection, good idle, and cruising economy below that throttle position. At W.O.T. it improves from holeshot to topend speed.
A cheap but effective modification you can do right away is to ventilate your engine cowl. You may pick up 100-150 RPM from this alone. Just use 1/2" longer screws and spacers to lift the fake louvers on top of your cowl. You'll also need to take a hole saw to the inner liner of the cowl to let fresh air in.
Try it, it works.
