Need Help With Identifying Year Models

In order to make sure that I order the right parts I need to know the correct way to decode the engine vin numbers on mercs/mariners and also johnsons. I found a site on hydrostreams that shows me the way to decode the hull id number. I own a laser and need to know the corrrect way to decode the HIN. I also am looking at another laser but the owner doesnt know what year it is. Does anyone know where I can find out this info on these motors and these boats. If you can help me that wopuld be great. Thanks guys for a great site.
