Bendix stuck???

I have a 1983 40hp Merc outboard and when I turn the key, the bendix is not popping up to engage the flywheel. Any ideas? I can turn the key and have my buddy knock the side of the motor and it fixes the problem. Problem is I can't go out alone. LOL I greatly appreciate any help:)

Check the charge on your battery first. If you are at full voltage, take the starter off and clean, clean, clean the area at the bendix gear and armature shaft. Don't use any lube on this shaft as it attracts dirt/dust and makes your sticking problem come back.
