I'm new to outboards, and was just wondering what's a GOOD ratio to use on a high performance 2.4 Mariner? Thanks, Ivan

if i remember your rig correctly you should probably use 32 to 1. i think the rule of thumb is 40 to 1 for motors that run under 7500 and 32 to 1 for above.

OK guys, 32:1 it is..... The only items other than the usual weed eater(Trimmer) or chainsaw that I own that are 2 stroke are my jet skis, and of course they're oil injected. How about the actual OIL? I presently use the synthetic Penzoil in my jet skis, is this fine for this 2.4 Mariner?

Jay Smith, (must be asleep to have not hit this thread already) who's been inside a lot more motors than I have is a big Pennzoil Synthetic advocate. He's also said that the Walmart brand (Itco or something close to that????) is the same if I remember right. Some of the Walmarts have gone back to stocking the full synthetic after discontinuing it a year ago. I don't know if Pennzoil has more than one full synthetic two stroke oil, but in the case of the one that's custmarily used in outboards I've never heard a complaint from anybody.

I've used Klotz synthetic for years myself and won't change unless they make a product change down the road or somebody does a real good selling job that there is in fact something better. The only drawback I'm aware of for the Klotz is that it's availability is more limited than the major brands like Pennzoil.

I've always avoided any oil that uses gimmicks like increased horsepower claims to market their product. When it comes to ten thousand dollar powerheads I just want a first class product with no hype.

Thanks again guys... I've been in the process of refurbishing a home we just bought, and I hate to say it, but I haven't had a chance to take this boat out since when I aquired it back in late April! I'm going to the lake this Sat & Sun, and will get back to this board on Monday with the results of my new outboard powered screamer. Again, thanks for the info. Ivan

A few boat stores and cycle shops sell a measureing bottle. Calibrated for ratio and does away with the math. So many gallons on the line instead of ounces. Just follow the right ratio column.
