PRESS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE UPDATE!!
EFFECTIVE 8 a.m. Wednesday, 6/9/04
Lakes and Upper River open to normal boating;
Lower River remains closed
The Fox Waterway Agency (FWA) announces that, effective at 8 a.m., Wednesday June 9, 2004,
in concurrence with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), Office of Water Resources, the
Lakes and Upper River (north of Stratton Lock and Dam) are open to normal boating conditions. The
lower river south of the Dam to the Algonquin Dam (by Hwy. 62 in Algonquin) remains closed to all boating
due to high water and extremely swift currents.
“The high water has been steadily declining,” stated Executive Director Ingrid Ruttendjie, “and we
expect that a combination of no rains, and the recent hot weather have helped in returning the system to
normal boating. It is great news to have the boating season get underway!”
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources staff have been continuously monitoring and
modeling the system during the past few weeks. Officials will continue to monitor the system to
determine when the lower river is at safe levels for opening back to normal boating conditions.
Up-to-date information is available on the FWA website at www.foxwaterway.state.il.us with this
site being updated 24-hours a day as necessary. The website also provides links to the National Weather
Service forecast sites for both the New Munster and the Algonquin gauges. For those without Internet
access, call the Fox Waterway Agency’s automated phone system at (847) 587-8540. The
restriction/closure information is provided in the opening greeting, and updated during the day as
necessary.
