View Full Version : Merc coil question
I have a 1993 260, I have replaced the stator on a regular bases, I have also replaced the switch boxs. My question is do the coils become weak over time or how do you check to see if they need to be replaced.

If you have a '93 with the stock OEM coils you a very lucky camper indeed ! Coils slowly become weak and don't deliver the voltage after only several years of recreational use and as quickly as a half a season of all out Drag Racing competition ! We have had new OEM coils in the begining of the season run 4 to 5 races and have noticed RPM loss( 300 - 500 ) replaced coils with new OEM ones and the RPMs come right back on the same day under exact test conditions ! I would replace those puppys ASAP with the OEM parts ...........
(339-832757A4) This is the Merc part you need..........
Hope this helps ,
Good luck ,

spk,
Why are you changing the Stator on a regular basis? Do they fail on you? What are you doing to test it? Thanks, just want to know if I need to also.
Thanks.
The stator is replaced for the same reson I will start replacing the coils. They become weak over time, and do not deliver the required voltage, I replace mine every two years.
Jay thanks for the information, I will be replacing them this weekend.
I'm running an 88 2.4 and still have the original coils. I have noticed an RPM loss from last season to this season. Also I'm starting to get a skip or loss of power when trying to take off. It does'nt do it all the time but it seems to be getting worse. Usually at a certain RPM when I'm almost on plan or when the motor seems to be under the most strain trying to get out of the whole it acts like someone pulled a plug wire loose but then it kicks back in and gets up. I don't notice any loss when I'm up and running just when trying to get out of the hole. Could this be a coil going bad?, Fuel pump going bad?, or what else could it be.
