I have a 78 and am disappointed with the speeds I am getting out of it. I believe the hull is holding me back, but have no others to compare with. I really like the seating in this boat so I don't want to get rid of it til I find out for sure if this is the bad link.

Finally someone with a Checkmate...I have the 20' Enchanter w/460 and a Berk drive. It was in rough shape so I took all the hardware off the boat and had it repainted and an engine rebuild. The fastest I had it was only 56 with a new sea Demon carb...but I don't think the secondarys were right. The boat itself is HEAVY, but I love the shape.

Hello checkmate 1 I also have 1978 checkmate II with ford 460 and berk jg pump. This is a stock set up based on the info I got from checkmate. It has a holley 600 carb. The motor says Ford 460 at 320HP from Hardin marine. The speeds you get is about the same as mine. But I have not been able to run on smooth water yet due to so much boat traffic on the lake that Igo to.Just by chance I met the previouse owner of my boat and he claims that these boats will run 70 mph.I find that hard to believe.I have had mine 55-60 at best.Hope this info helps.Rumblefish

I have a 1977 Hydrostream V-King 460 Panther jet.
The best I ever got was 62 mph.
Checkmates & Hydrostreams were made to fly & not stay glued to the water. If your boat was an outboard at wop,
How much of the boat is in the water (0 to 12 inch). With jets the pump always goes dry.

Theres enough in the water for the scoop beneath the hull. However, when I jump the boat off a wave I can hear the whine from the pump...

Not to be a smart*ss in any way here, but truthfully you just need to be happy with what your hull will give you. Trying to fight that is a losing battle, tried it many times. A recreational boat does it's job well. A race boat does also. Neither one does both:

disappointed with the speeds I am getting out of it

claims that these boats will run 70 mph

I have had mine 55-60 at best

The best I ever got was 62 mph

The fastest I had it was only 56

Answer:

The boat itself is HEAVY

I believe the hull is holding me back

my dad has a 78 taylor ss 460 berkley, i believe this boat has an almost identical hull as your checkmate, 55-60mph sounds dead on, in a drag his boat and my 18ft 327 v-drive are about as close as it gets. their great recreatiuonal boats just cruise and enjoy it. p.s. place diverters are fun!
