Damn, quite a story. Like you say, good day for safety.
I drag the boat up there twice a summer to boat with friends. I often launch in Freemont for the run up to Oshkosh/Winnebago. I guess you are talking about the bar next to 'Thr Bridge Bar and Restaurant" Can't remember the name of it but noticed them working on the additions when I was up for Labor Day weekend....oh yeah, I think it's called the Polar Bar. Damn, it's hell gettin old. The mind is the second thing to go.....
I like boating that whole area. Alot of nice places to stop. Fin and Feather, The Other Place, Fratellos...got love it.

Balzy,
Did it throw a blade and shake the gearcase apart?
That ET looks EXACTLY like a 26 ET I bought from a guy on the board. Mine didn't last 10 hrs before it had (2) blades cracked! I think the guy is welding cracked choppers then cutting them!!!
BB ring a bell?

Guys:
Looks like this gearcase has (had?) a standard bearing carrier.
Unless you replace that with the HD unit (from a torque master/
sportmaster/cle/etc.) this is unfortunately going to happen.
The stock carrier can't hold up in a HP, surfacing propeller
application. Can't blame JC's for not having the proper carrier.
They just installed the nosecone!

I certainly agree that an HD Bearing Carrier is an asset for surfacing gearcases running surfacing props.
Balzy...did that case have an HD carrier?
Sorry about your hard luck Balzy...sounds like you are taking it well!
That left a mark! Would be interested to know the primary cause of that failure! Tuff luck. Sorry Balzy.

Fred, Fin and Feather, The Other Place, Fortellos are all good places. Been to all of em many times. You are right Polar Bar is the name of the place. They have a TV outside that is so big you can sit in the middle of the river and see it clear as a bell. Let us know next time you are coming our way. We run that whole section of the river all the time. If the water is high enough you gotta come with us from the other direction at New London. That's where the river is real narrow and curvy. Like an Indy car course.
Chris, no the prop got the damage from the gearcase, not the gearcase from the prop. This was a prop from BB and I haven't had any trouble with it. Also got a 28 cleaver from him and no problems with it either.
Steve, you are right, IMO the bearing carrier spun. You can see the wear on the side of it. The bearings actually feel ok in it yet. I think it just came loose. And you are right again. JC's put the cone and what used to be a torque tab on it when it was empty. Nothing they did caused this one. They did a beautiful job on it. It's kind of disappointing it blew up. It didn't run the greatest on the HST but it sure was perty!!!!!!!!!
I was told it had a heavy duty carrier. It did not have the drain hole in the carrier though. I questioned this and was told that they were made that way. I always thought that all the HD carriers had the drain plug in them. Does anyone know if this is true?

MTCM, like I said before looks like the carrier spun to me.
Early CLE's still had the drain on the nose of the case & no drain plug in the carrier, but the carrier is definitely a heavy duty one. I bought one about 5 years ago from Bob Garone and mine is setup like that.

Sorry about your luck Balzy that looks nasty. Not sure if anyone does this but I was wondering as a preventive step, is there any way to pin or stake the bearing carrier to the case. How hard would the material holding the carrier need to be.

Thanks for not selling me that gearcase. I think the skeg came off for whatever reason. I thought those were Hi perf parts (not). Maybe you should give-up boating in shallow waters. Got a real nice used CLE $1000.

Balzy, it sounds like you didn't have that gearcase very long. Perhpas you should contact the person you got it from as perhaps it was not assembled correctly. Where did you get it?
Ever tried a sportmaster on your HST?

as in, "I accuse you of...______!" I guess I'm torn between not pointing the finger and finding out what went wrong. I work with Japaneese manufacturers alot. They have a saying; Don't find something or someone to blame, just find the problem!"
I never went wrong following that advice! Just my 2 yen worth.;)

My unit has a screw through the case & into the carrier to prevent spinning.....is this not a standard Merc screw or did someone add it?

by someone. They don't come that way. The retaining clip with the bent tang keeps them from backing out.
Now you have all winter to put it all back.
I'm singing the lower unit blues with ya Balzy!!
Sucks to break,
