Hi All, Ive switched props on my 225 from a renegade 27 pitch to a raker 24 pitch on my 21 starflite. I was running only 56 mph at 5500 rpms and I was told id get more top end out of the raker, even though its a smaller pitch. Does this make sense? Also, Seems like I need a slightly thicker thrust bushing with the raker then the renegade as the raker rubs the gearcase housing. Do they make different bushings for the different props? Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Jim

Different thrust hub for Raker and Renegade.

The renegade horn is smaller than the gearcase and takes a different hub. (Most OMC props use the raker-style thrust washer.) For each 2 pitch you drop, typically, you will pickup up to 300 rpm. Going from a 27 to a 24, you could pick up 450 rpm. For each 2 pitch you change, your engine torque will change about 10%. In your case, going to the 24 could provide up to 15% more engine torque through whole the rpm range. You may or may not pickup top end-depending on the torque band of your engine. The renegade prop has great bow-lifiting capabilites. On a heavy boat, it will get more of the boat out of the water, increasing speed. It does have more slip as it has 4 blades. The raker is an ultimate high speed prop, also a bow-lifter but is not as good out of the hole as the 4-blade. Pitch for pitch the raker is faster.
