what would cause my starter to just spin the gear and not engage the flywheel, first time i tried this year, I thought maybe the gear was slipping on the shaft, took it apart. looks fine, glad i did the nut was almost off, tightened it, put it back on, same thing, any ideas anybody? battery not enough charge maybe? thankx, Gary

If the starter drive (gear) is meshing with the flywheel ring gear, but not spinning flywheel while starter shaft is spinning, replace the starter drive, it has a rubber hub inside the brass colored housing that is spun probably from someone over lubing the starter shaft.

Check to see that your battery is not on backwards. The motor will spin but the wrong way. Also you will need new rectifers.:(

had same prob on my 115 evinrude, battery was flat ,had enough charge to starter, but not enough to engage into flywheel, try putting full charge on battery, also check polarity of cables. if cable polarity is backward, you will need to change the voltage rectifier out, hope it helps!

If battery is good, clean the shaft the bendix slides on with emory cloth and lube lightly. That fixed mine a while back.
