View Full Version : cutting and welding Drive shaft?
I wrecked my lower unit last week when I struck a rock. I've found another lower unit but it has a long shaft. Where is the best place to cut and weld the shaft? What is the best way to prepare both ends before welding? Anyone have any pics. or advice.

No I do not have pictures. Yes, I have advice. Have it professionally done. Position is not critical. Straightness and integrity of weld is. Resplining is also a good option. Eagle one can do it either way.

most any competent machine shop Should be able to cut and reweld the shaft, The shaft has to be cut then needs to be beveled on each end for full penetration of the weld bead, and has to be welded and kept in perfect alignment. Not a job for the do it yourselfer unless you are a machininst or a professional welder. I have a welding business in Georgia, and have done two for friends, but I would send mine to Eagle one or another place of your choice that is familiar with the process just to save the hassle of it. Its just alot quicker and easier when you are set up for it and do it on a daily basis.
just my opinion but I personally would rather have mine resplined than welded if possible. Good luck ~GB
What the hell are you guys talking about? Send it to Ken Mendendorp, to be cut down and re-splined.

What is the charge to have cut and resplined if I send him just the shaft? Does he heat treat the new splines or is that necessary?

Just think of how much scrap alumn you will have when the improperly welded driveshaft snaps and the mota goes into freewheel mode at 7 or 8 thousand rpm:confused:   Tripps

Heat treat it like Merc does and wear the crank or don't heat treat like they do on the 200 shaft and save the crank and replace the shaft and then its a maybe . I'd say don't heat treat it. Its an induction heat treat if you decide to do it and thats pretty easy to have done somewhere.

I think Ken does it for like 100 bucks. or somewhere around there. I would trust that a lot sooner than a weld. I'm planning on meeting him today I'll tell him somebody is looking for him.
