Hi,
I need some information on registration of a US-titled boat purchased in Canada.
Here is the situation. I'm located in Ontario, Canada.
I am about to buy a boat from the States. The seller of the boat is kind enough to drive the boat in Canada.
Since the boat will be sold in Canada, I will not pass through customs.
Please let me know if you know how I can register the boat in Canada. Is it possible without taking the boat to customs?
I would appreciate your contributions.

you should be the one to take it through customs. They will charge 15% of the purchase price, and give you the docs that you NEED to register the boat in Canada. You can try to screw the system and say the boat was here and never regestered but I would not mess around and just do it the right way.

The seller will run into trouble driving through with a boat and driving right back without one. Do it legit.

Thanks for your answers.
Apparently there is a missunderstanding, though.
No one is asking information to do it illegally. Our main consideration here is the driving distance. In order to meet at the halfway the seller should meet me in Canada.
Let me rephrase the question than, is it legally possible to register a US-titled boat purchased in Canada?
Thanks

Contact a broker and have them do the paperwork ahead of time. If the seller has the broker paperwork going across, they will have no problem being the carrier/making the delivery. They should not be charged anything as well.

You will have to pay the broker a small fee, maybe $100 and the local taxes. That should make the transaction legal.

You can then take the broker paperwork to your local customs office, often at the airport where they will issue you a local registration number.

Good luck.

...or else the seller is going to be spending a long time answering questions at the border- either coming or going.

They'll ask him when he's crossing what his business is, so if he says he's selling (delivering the boat) he'll have to fill out custom forms anyways.

If he says he's coming for anyother reason....they'll be looking for that boat and trailer on his way back, and then he's in for a long stay in customs.........

I talked to the people about this at Canada Customs and they told me that if you're sold a boat that doesn't have a Vessel Licence (what the ownership is called in Canada) then you can go and get a form explaining this, get it signed by a notary and they'll assign you numbers.
