Does anybody have any experiance with the Optimax 200XS. I am planing on buying either that one or a Promax 225, by the way what is the main difference except power output on these two outboards.

The Optimax is environmentally friendly, fairly efficient (as far as outboards go) basic consumer oriented motor. The ProMax is much more performance oriented, lighter weight, higher RPM capable, but still a reliable good all around outboard. Mercury is coming out with a 225x Promax which is a combination of the direct injection from the Optimaxes and the performance of the Promax. The 225 is supposed to put out around 250. David

Is the early first edition of the Promax/Optimax (direct injected) motors. There have been some problems with them. David

I assume you mean the 200 XS from mercs performance division. It is an opti motor, with a performance mid and gearcase. It is based on the 2.5 block and runs very well. I drove an allison this year with one for a little while, it out performes the 225 pro max. That will change when the promax X comes out. The reason for the 225 X is that the opti motor was outperforming it. (so I hear anyway).
Look into the X, otherwise go for the XS, it is a real nice motor.

The 200 XS is outperforming the standard 225 PM for real? In what ways?? Do you know actual HP? LF

Top speed on Allison SS-2000 was about the same, acceleration was similar, and fuel economy was un-real. (that is the real difference)

I have no concrete evidence, but word on the "liquid" street is that the Optimax motors are VERY strong, and most all who have one are extremely happy with the performance.:D :D

Just what I've heard.

Let's build on something good, MERC factory!!

I believe JimmyB has one on his boat. He could probably give you some good info regarding both the 225X and 200XS since I think he has ran both first hand on his boat. I think he chose the 200XS due to the outstanding fuel economy he was getting along with the performance. Based on my limited knowledge of what I've heard and read about the XS, I think it would be an excellent choice for those concerned about fuel consumption and reliability.

dangerous summed things up nicely...

i wrote a comparison about my impressions on the 200XS vs 225X... you can read it on the allison owners board... here:
