I HAD AN OLDER 16'BAJA THAT DID NOT HAVE A H.I.N ON IT ANYWHERE. I WAS TOLD IT WAS A 73, AND THEY DID NOT REQUIRE EVERYONE TO CONFORM TO THE STANDARD TILL 75? I SUBMITTED ALL THE INFO I HAD TO THE D.N.R, AND THEY ISSUED ME A STICKER WITH AN H.I.N. NO HASSLES. THEN I CALLED BAJA, AND THEY STAMPED ME A NEW ID PLATE WITH MODEL,H.I.D, AND RATING'S, AND SENT IT TO ME N/C, WITH RIVIT'S.

Pre 19?? I forgot what date the USCG started mandating that the builder put in a hin number.. I have a link to more HIN number info and I even have a Link to a USCG database that you can serch all the hin numbers and you can see who built the boat.

that is the link to the serchable data base that you can find out who built a boat if you have the HIN number.. You talk the first 3 letter of the HIN which is called the MIL. those three letter will tell you who made the hull and have any contact info and where the mold came from and if it has been sold. Great way to get info. there is also a bunch of other info here.

Hey Playin Hooky, what colour , length or other characteristics can you describe about your boat. I have an early 70's Checkmate minus it's HIN as well. Mine is a 14' rated for 150 hp.
The guys hooked me up with some contact numbers for further info but I'm usually not near a phone during business hours.
Let me know what you find out.

Dont be too hard on that old 115 L6. I have a buddy running 56mph with an old 115 on a cobra. P/S the Cobra doesnt have a h.i.n either, and it is an early 1970's.http://members.aol.com/popeyebob/A/steve

While we're on the subject, here's a Q. I cut a section out of the back of the Baja, to do transon repair as you know. The HIN was on the section I cut out. I will not be reinstalling this section. Can I just cut the HIN out and keep it w/ the boat? I was thinkin when I put on the last coat of resin, before it sets hard I would stamp numbers back on? Thoughts?
All the new wood is in and we'll start re-glassin' the transom this week. The powder coating is done on the home made beezel for the inst pod. Came out great. Friend purchased "Eastwoods" Hot Coat system, I supplied the powder. Looks just like the stuff I been gettin' from Eddie Marine.
Need to get the PTE fuel cell to begin final rebuild under the splashwell.
Project Baja rolls on.....and on and on and on! seems the more I do the more there is to do, but excitement remains high!

I would check with your local water cops... There the ones that have the say in this.. I recently redid a transum in one of our towboats and they told us not to worry with it.. But that was in our area with water cops that we deal with on a daily basis. I make sure to keep them happy since I'm sure you won't want you boat towed and have to prove to them that it is not stolen!

Depending on your wishes you might be able to just reglass the old HIN panel back in. This might be a faded look or something but it shouldn't be hard to do.
