OK, I am working on my first 2.4L rebuild (1985 Merc 200). The motor blew a head gasket last year and there is some scuffing of the cylinder wall. The other 5 holes look great! I know it is hard to tell from the pictures but does this require a new sleeve? Note the area right in front of the ports looks like it is missing a little chrome.:(

Hard to tell but probably not. Look at it real carefully for peeling. Some pitting is normal.

If anything you can probably bore it and get an oversized piston.
It dosn't look like you need to re-sleeve.

How much pitting is normal? Why causes th pitting? I pulled the head on my 2.4 and it has some pitting in the chrome.

I dont think you can bore a chome cylinder. Might be able to hone it.
The pitting is how chrome bore motor come from the factory. That is not a problem. I would say you don’t need a sleeve but you have to measure the bore for out of round to be sure.

That looks like it's got .040 piston slop if you look at the top photo. I know thats not likely but it looks like it? When you suck water in a chrome bore the steam can blast the chrome off.

...for all the responses. I am taking the block, crank, and bearings with me to Ruck's tomorrow morning. Since he is going to do the heads might as well find out from an expert what he thinks. Only want to do this once!

Jim Ruck rocks! He ported my 2.5 and did a great job. It hauls ass, starts from cold in a couple of cranks, and idles like a stock 200. Great pricing too.

I took the block and parts to Jim Ruck today. He verified the piston for #6 was toast but the block was OK. He sanded it a bit then ball honed all 6 cylinders. He got me a replacement piston and rings. Jim is also going to send me a complete gasket kit when the heads are done next week. Him and his wife Mary RULE!:D

Jimmy is the man !!!!!!!!!!! Sure glad I have someone like him only 35 minures away. The last time I wounded my 2.5 on a Friday afternoon, I could have been running again on Saturday if I needed to. Went over there Saturday morning, he straightened all my bores, gave her a hone job, and decked the block. I was on my way home by 11:00 that morning, and that's cause we stood around and BS'd for 1/2 an hour. He has always been right there when I needed him. He is very reasonable on his prices too. Maybe we can finally pull him and his bride out of the shop for a day and you will see him at BTTW this year.

We proved 2 years ago with Matt and Michelle I could still maintain 60+ with 4 adults on board. Maybe with Rucks magic on the heads and the reeds we'll see 65+!
