Mercury Racing Releases New Pro Max 225X Outboard

Fond du Lac, WI - Mercury Racing is pleased to announce the release of the

all-new Mercury Pro Max 225X consumer performance outboard. The highly

anticipated engine features the latest marine propulsion technology available

from Mercury Racing.

The 225X leads the 225 horsepower outboard engine class with unmatched

power and performance. The powerhead is all-new, from the 2.5 Liter V-6 cylinder

block to the PCM 555 SmartCraftTM CAN electronic control system.

Production begins with a stock Mercury 2.5 Liter 200 EFI V-6 cylinder

block. High performance cylinder liners feature race-derived transfer ports for

increased torque and knock resistance, similar to that developed for the

legendary 2.5 EFI consumer and race outboards. In addition, the cylinder block

exhaust chest is specially machined for optimal exhaust flow and power. The

modified exhaust adapter plate and center section reduce engine backpressure and

noise.

In addition to the race-inspired cylinder block, race-style cylinder heads

help separate the Pro Max 225X from all other 225 h.p. outboards. Using the same

casting as the 2.5 EFI Drag race heads, the new 225X o-ring cylinder heads

minimize cylinder bore distortion. Enlarged water chambers provide increased

water flow close to the combustion chambers and spark plugs, lowering engine

temperature for enhanced reliability and durability.

Electronic single point oil injection feeds oil to the fuel management

system vapor separator where it is mixed prior to being injected into the

engine. This highly reliable, variable-oiling system automatically adjusts the

fuel/oil ratio, delivering proper lubrication throughout the operating range.

The system automatically reduces the amount of oil at idle, minimizing smoke.

Internal enhancements include a crankshaft outfitted with nine seal rings.

The use of two additional seal rings, derived from race outboard development,

increases crankcase sealing for smoother engine running quality and better

overall performance.

Steel-cage rod bearings, placed between the top-guided connecting rods and

crankshaft journals, are used to enhance engine durability. New pistons feature

a custom profile that is unique to the 225X and a strengthened piston pin boss

casting that enhances durability. The pistons feature thin, high strength steel

rings (two per piston). The thin rings more easily conform to the cylinder bore,

simultaneously enhancing engine sealing while reducing friction.

The all-new fuel injection system features a lightweight, composite fuel

rail that is mounted vertically on the center of the intake plate. Rubber mounts

isolate vibration to the compact, composite fuel injectors mounted just in

front of the intake reeds. An inline fuel filter, mounted between the vapor

separator and fuel rail, provides added protection from debris entering the fuel

injectors. Rubber coated reed blocks cushion the impact of the five-petal,

single-stage composite reeds, greatly enhancing reed life without sacrificing

performance. The 225X uses the same air intake plenum as the OptiMax 200XS. The

flywheel cover/airbox has been modified for enhanced airflow.

All Pro Max 225X models are equipped with a digital SmartCraft Controller

Area Network (CAN) electronic control system. The CAN electronic control

computer processor optimizes fuel, spark timing and knock control for each

cylinder independently, enhancing engine running quality and performance. The

processor also operates the electronic singlepoint lubrication system. And, if

that were not enough, the Engine GuardianTM System monitors over 40 engine

functions to forewarn of possible problems that could lead to engine damage. The

CAN computer processor also drives SmartCraft System Monitor and accessory

System Gauges. The SC1000 System Monitor and accessory System Tachometer

calculate fuel flow and range. Additionally, both drive optional single-function

analog style System Link gauges. Models equipped with the 20" (508 mm) center

section and integral power trim come with a digital power trim sensor for

reading trim on the SC1000 System Monitor and or accessory System Link trim

gauges. A belt-driven alternator with 60-amp charging capacity makes running a

variety of electronic accessories worry-free.

The Pro Max 225X comes standard with the SC1000 System Monitor and hardware

that use a single data cable to connect an assortment of SmartCraft System

gauges for both single and multi-engine applications. In addition, the optional

SmartCraft System Speedometer accepts data from National Marine Electronics

Association (NMEA) GPS connections for read-out of highly accurate boat speeds.

Models are available with the 15" (381 mm) short shaft or 20" (508 mm)

standard center section. The 20" center section models are available with a

right-hand rotation 1.87:1 gear ratio Torque Master or Sport Master gearcase.

The 15" short shaft models feature the heavy-duty offshore swivel/clamp bracket

assembly, single-ram trim cylinder and the 1.87:1 Sport Master gearcase with

either right-hand or left-hand rotation.

Sounds expensive, What is the difference in the boost port feed compared to the 200 HP 2.5? Is it rod slot lengthening?

Flat Out

I will probably cost around $ 20,000 or more in Canada.Have they released a price yet?

suggest list price for 20" w/ sport or torquemaster case is around $14200. dunno what the "street" value is...

Which 200 2.5L? 200 promax or 200XS (optimax)? the 200 promax used the same liner as the stock 200 2.5L motors. The 200XS uses a completely different liner. You will find the porting to be similar to the 280 motors, except for the timing and the 225X uses a steel liner.
