Was about to remove the powerhead today.

Removed lower unit. Disconnected electricals, shift shaft, etc, and removed the 10 nuts that hold the powerhead. Then attached shop hoist to lifting eye screwed into flywheel. Tried to have the crank perfectly horizontal.

Lifted with the hoist, but only the front part of the powerhead lifted from the adapter plate. The rear is stuck. Tried a for quite a while, but gave up because I had to get something to eat. Will try again tomorrow.

Any ideas of what is causing the problem and what to do about it?

If those long studs are just a little crooked they will bind in the exhaust plate housing creating a cam lock type situation. The fact that the front lifted and the back didn't proves it's racked. Lift slow and strait. Also spray the studs tonight...they may have a nice coat of rust on them.

Tried to lift straight, but when the front starts lifting from the plate, it is of course not going straight any more.

I did spray spray them before leaving for dinner. Hopefully they will come out tomorrow.

Did you have that coke hat on when you were tryin'? Sometimes lookin' silly makes Mercs un-cooperative.

Thanks for letting me know, Norris. I look silly even without the hat, so I guess I should stick to those Yammies. I wish someone had told me before I bought that Mercury.

Run them back up to the top loose put a stack of washers or a socket on the cutout shelf under the stud now you can use the nuts to push as well as lift the powerhead off.

Funny, I just came here to pick up those nuts and go back and do what you just suggested when I read yourpost. After another couple of attempts, I now know that it is the rear starbord stud that is stuck, and I will do just as you proposed.

I will let you know how it worked out it a couple of hours.

It first budged a couple of mm and then the boat suddenly fell about a decimeter.
