I think that term or name is actually registered or trademarked by Teleflex. Theoretically, you should be able to turn loose of the wheel at almost any speed, and it would stay where you left it. There are few, if any, power assisted systems available for outboards now, but they would need some form of power unit (pump?) to multiply your input with the wheel to the strength necessary to turn the boat. Some of the older OMC V-8s had power steering.

Merc had one also, but it's my understanding that they were troublesome. A local guy had one on a bassboat and it ate pumps.
The full hydraulic is a good option also, although it's not power assisted.

so I don't know how difficult this would be, but I would love to see a power assist retro fit kit for the Sea Star Pro Hyd. systems.
I would gladly pay for that upgrade.

It either has to be engine driven (powerhead mounted pump), or electrical. The charging systems are barely up to the task of keeping the battery charged now, much less powering an electric P/S pump as well. Hydraulic steering is the best option at present. Basically zero friction, very little torque steer, and at low speeds, pretty much feels like power steering. The new Teleflex BayStar systems should go a long way towards making hydraulic steering available for lower cost, lower horsepower applications.

Just about the time I was going to finally spend the $1500 they went out of business.
I'm telling you...a $750-800 upgrade would really be attractive...come on Rick, it's only an electric motor thing with a bypass valve dohicky???
Build it and they will buy...:D
