I have a friend that has a 2001 Mercury XR6 150 and since I don't know that much about Mercs I need your help... His question is about the safety trim can it be over ridden so it can trim up higher while under power????
Is it a switch or in the hydraulics???

Most motors have a large diameter ram(s) for trim and a smaller one(s) for lift, not remembering what is on that one. Are you saying it is not going up to where it should? Or does it need to go further due to transom angle or bow lift? It will not trim any more than the large cylinder goes out if it has that setup. I have never needed one to go more than that, and it torque steered bad at that point. Does it have a bow lifting prop in it? Usually you lose your water or get handling problems by going more than they give you, and you really need to address other things like the prop, boat balance, etc.; because dragging the LU at that angle does not help you. My inline has two larger rams that will go any height you set it to go, but it loses water pressure if I go any higher than about the stock setting anyway. Even there I can only hold the steering straight it torques so bad. It needs setback badly on that particular hull.

His main concern is when he loads it on the trailer. There is a heavy current and he drives it on and wants to avoid hitting the gearcase on the ramp.. I know the older Merc's could trim out of the water under power but I guess the newer style can't?... He is just wondering if he could do this with the newer style...

Is there a bypass in the ram????

There are little gizmos called trim extenders that can provide up to an extra inch of useable trim. Cablea's and BPS haz em'.

I see. I can't do that with mine anyway or it just sucks the motor/boat down onto the water and it hits. I idle it on with the prop just about out of the water, then climb out that nice open bow and stand dry on the trailer to crank it on:) Sometimes the wind blows hard over the ramp there with the same effect. I like the side tubes/rollers on the trailer for that, but have not put them on my current boat rig yet. My ramp will stir up gravel if I gas it there also.

How do you make it go up all the way?

If it is when the key is in a certain position then it is electrical and can be changed.

I would think that would be handy near the shore or around the weeds too.

My inline Merc has a trim, and a trailer button to go up the rest of the way. My force has one switch that just goes up/down, and when you get up on the little cylinder it will go back down if you gas it much. If I get the prop half out of the water I can gas it and toss a nice water fountain... Just have to check the water so you don't run it dry; I lift it up like that for weeds all the time but it can get loud.

Someone here will know what rams/limit switches it has. I have not looked at a 2.5 in a while.
