This may be a stupid question but
Will a tach for a 4 cycle OB work on a 2 stroke ?

That looks like a marine universal tach. How it works is you set the cylinders for 4 stroke cylinders and hook it to the coil like a car. The pulses are for an outboard where you hook the leads to the AC side of the alternator, usually from under the flywheel at the rectifier or ignition box, and set it to the pulses per revolution the alternator makes. Can't remember the number but most of them work for all 'Rudes and Mercs, but Chryco has an oddball alternator with more poles or something that nobody else uses. Someone here will say, or search for it as I have seen it posted. You can also search the web for teleflex tachometer and find the instructions for one that tells it, I had too once and found it. That will explain it all.

Yes it will. Sho305 nailed it. If you have a 6cyl 2stroke, set it on 6P.

Here is a good page for setting it: http://www.tflx.com/obtachtrad.html
Even tells you how to wire it.
Page of Chrycos 20 pole oddball stuff (motors affected): http://www.tflx.com/obtachsel.html
Yes I got one of those darn things....idiots.
Explanation of Chryco 20 pole can be found in the search Q & A.
