We have attached whistles to our childrens life jackets. Once they get over the novelty of having them there, they will know they are for emergency only. Let them watch TITANIC once.
Give them swimming lessons from a qualified instructor. My kids are 10,8, & 6. They can all jump off the dock into 15ft. of water w/o their lifejackets. Teach them to swim when they are young, it's a life skill they will always have.

Another Kid Tip

Aside from good life jackets, We put good fitting Bike Helmets on our kids when we take them on CRUISING outings and Poker Runs (cruising again) with eye protection.

The Bike Helmet will protect your kids head if you accidentlly (by Accident of course) launch off a wave and they fall out of the seat, the helmet will keep thier hair out of thier face and provide some sun protection too.

They really work and gets kids used to the idea of fast boats and helmets at an early age

We often take night cruises on the Colorado river with the kids. They can swim and wear life jackets, but with a swift current, protruding boat docks, etc, we worried about how to find them in the dark if the worst happened. Solved the problem by using glow sticks attached to there life vests. Cheap, bright enough, and last for hours.
