Have the heavy duty hub for the large propshaft 840389A2 and it doesn't fit well in a Trophy 48825944A45. There is side to side play. It loks like this is the only hub available for the 1.25" propshaft. What's the deal?

There are [4] hard plastic strips that are glued to the metal hub [insert] and they have a tendency to fall off. Did yours fall off [which would make it sloppy].

The strips are there but they actually stick out less than the metal body. They are hard plastic. I have the HD hub for a small shaft which has strips that are more "rubbery".
Question is...is there another hub for these wheel or is there only one for the large propshaft? If so I guess we could just glue some strips on the hub.

Jimmy B said once there was only one hub for the "fatshafts", but there was two for the normal shafts, according to what prop you use. The smaller shaft has one with a non metallic [plastic] insert that'll leave you paddling and a metallic with the plastic strips.

I am currently have the same problem with a new hill prop that I just got, the hub fits really tight in my trophy prop but seems to bottom ( on the built in thrust washer) out in the hill before it gets tight, I have an e-mail into mr hill to see what he thinks, I am thinking i may need to machine off the hub and use a regular thrust washer
I will let you know what I find out
BTW the little plastic things don't seem to make any difference

There are a lot of Hill'
s with odd ball castings out there. I have one of them. I had the back side machined and that took care of everything. Maybe yours was machined for the dinky plastic Flo -torques that are a shorter length.

Here is a link to mercury parts express: http://www.mercurypartsexpress.com/PartsExpress/ProductSelection/Accessories/getProductGroup.asp?CID=163151190072227055261&lvlOneKey=74&key=10006&level=3&store=Accessories
There are 7 pages of hubs and parts. You might be able to find what you are looking for.
Also, I have a picture somewhere of two flow torque hubs next to each other and one is shorter than the other. The performance hub was longer than the plastic hub.
That doesn't sound like the problem that you have David but maybe thats the problem that blkmtrfan is having.

Did you machine the hub or the prop? After i posted the above, i thought maybe the prop could be machined??
With the Hill it is slopy side to side as you descriped I just figured it wasn't going into the prop far enough to set the tapers together (the hub is slightly tapered right) so I figured our problems might be similar.
BTW My current trophy the hub fits so snug it is hard to get in and out. I have another trophy (smaller pitch) being to shipped to me as we speak (for a ski prop) I wonder if it will work.

My hub was too long so it would bottom out before ity slid all the way in. I think about 1/4" was machined off the backside. The best part is I had it machined for one of the big proshaft flo torques. When I tried to get a plastic deal in there it was still too big. Then I learned of the longer high performance small shaft hub:) Ain't Mercury grand. Might as well machine the prop that way when you try to sell it it won't be a hassle.

So that is not the problem your having with the trophy?

It goes all the way in but there is some side to side play so if you put it on the shaft will turn a degree or so before the flo torque catches the prop hub. So it would probably clunck everytime you get on and off the gas.

Yea, that dosen't sound right, it would eventually clunk itself (and maybe your lower) to pieces. That is weird since they are both mercury items. There is another part number for a large shaft hub, but as far as I know it just replaces the one I have shown. If you punch in that number on parts express it give a newer number.

That is the most useless application chart I've ever seen in the history of the world. Well there is only one for the big shaft and this one clunks in a Laser II and this Trophy so who knows. Time for some redneck ingenuity.

On what you come up with, maybe some non shrink epoxy or similar goo. Talk to you later, Scott

I am running a ChopperII and my "fat shaft" fits great into the insert /hub. There must be a dimensional difference [different reference points] for some of the prop's hubs. The tapered shafts would only sholder in so far and the threads would make up the difference [variance] in length. The fat shafts have to shoulder up at the threads so a length difference would be a real problem.
The fat shafts are the only way to go, though, for surface running [I found out the hard way]. My ChopperII, the one before last, and shaft are still "swimming" out in mid channel.
