I'm planning on selling it, and wondering if anyone might have a good idea:
I've got a 1996 40 HP Tohatsu. 2 cylinder, with controls. One SS prop and the OEM prop as well.
Motor's in excellent shape overall.
What do you think I could ask for it?

I wish I knew more about those outboards. I could take a guess and say $1200.

Depending on what options it will be around the $1000 mark plus or minus a hundred or two.

Probably around $1,600 - $1,800 depending on market for the 3 cylinder model and $1,200 for the 2 cylinder model. That is actually a little generous for the 2 cylinder. The 3 cyl is much faster, most had power trim. smoother. They shared the same block with the 50 with a couple of minor internal parts changes. A very dependable, quick little motor.
If it is in a area without any other motors it may be harder to sell. Tohatsu also makes the Nissan and some small motors for Mercury. It also shares some parts with Yamaha.
