It must've been a shippin' error, or identity theft............ yeah, that's it, identity theft............. somebody musta' got my credit card and sent it to me as a prank, and these people won't take this special stuff back.

You know the old Pachanga is gettin' pretty tired and needs new power. You remember when we broke down several years ago and had to get towed in by the SeaDoo don'tcha? You don't wanna have to worry about that hapnin' again do ya? And besides, nobody's put one of these in a boat yet.

New furniture????????? What 3 rooms??????? From who???? She's that high dolla' decorator ain't she??????? Kain't' we talk about it a little bit?????

GM claims 625 HP on pump gas. This is the smaller version. The bigger one is 725 on race gas. One of the magazines has dyno'd one of these right out of the box and claimed 700+ for the smaller one. I'm a little worried about header clearance, because the headers almost touch the hatch cover on the boat now with the short deck 540 that's in it, and all the new 572 crate motors are tall decks.

"what cfm carb are you gonna run?"

It comes with an 850, but it's boxed seperately and we didn't take the plastic off for the picture.

My Pachanga's an 89 and it came with a Bravo. I put a Blackhawk on it severl years ago and have had a 540/575 in front of it ever since. Now I'm sorry that I didn't buy that Mercruiser standoff box with the built in steering on E Bay several weeks ago.

David, if Hillary and the rest of the crooks in Congress didn't already steal half of my income I'd REALLY have some stuff.

Goofour, the block's cast iron. It's Chevy's Gen VI which has a mechanical fuel pump provision back on the right front corner, unlike the Gen V. It's tall deck and has a 4 3/8" stroke and 4.560 bore. Most 572's that are build ups have a 4 1/2 X 4 1/2 and why GM decided to make this one a shorter stroke with a bigger bore I haven't heard. It has a plastic timing cover, which I don't care for much, but can live with, and a lot of bare cast iron machined surfaces on the block that are gonna rust bad if they're not painted with somethin', but overall the cosmetics are great. The color is a tad off the old Chevrolet Orange, but not red like most of the promo pictures appeared.

Raceman,
That's a nice piece. Should make the Pachanga rock. Do you think the Black Hawh can take the torque? I can't remember what it was rated for.
Regards,
Steve

I dunno Steve. I'd guess it would, especially with the way I run my stuff. I don't ever really hammer it leavin' and with the protected lakes around here, they don't get exit/re-entry loads either, so I'm hopin' it will. I ran a twin turbo 502 for a short while and it seemed to handle it okay. The 540 that's in it now ain't no slouch either and will push the boat into the upper 80's on Stalker.

A few guys here locally are running BlackHawks with BIG inch small blocks producing 600-700hp, then adding nitrous to them, and their BlackHawks hold up. (They have to start them in gear and can't **** while running). Steve Z has met some of these guys, Camel, Stevie's Stoker, and those boats run 120-140. Wouldn't hurt to have your BlackHawk gone through first though. :)

I don't think shifting while running makes any more difference with a high horse 572 than with a low horse 454. The engines don't make substantially different power at 800RPM. It all depends on how slow it'll idle I guess.

MODVP22
03-14-2004, 01:04 PM
That makes sence, these guys have their idle set real high because their motors won't idle at low RPMs (under1000)so that's why they may not shift while running. They throw a freakin' wake leaving the channel.
What props are you running Raceman? From what I've heard the BlackHawk props not only come as a matched set and very expensive, but they are had to come by.

Just what ya need there raceman, something else to sit around and collect dust. I've got an idea, why don't we take the motor off the rendezvous and retrofit that with the blackhawk on it!! Now what would be a tunnel hull worth running!!!!

Is an 850 carb big enough for a 572? I would think you would need 1000 cfm+. plastic timing covers have been on the small v6/v8 GM for a while and i cant say that I am in love with them. Tell your wife it could be worse at least its not going in the kitchen like the T4.

Raceman
03-16-2004, 07:43 AM
I was kinda surprised at the 850 also, but I guess GM did it for a reason. I've got a 1050 Dominator on the 540 in the boat now and considered tryin' an 1150 on it, but never got around to it. I think the higher horse version of the new 572 has a bigger carb.

CRMERC
03-16-2004, 02:24 PM
Carb cfm is usealy Double the cubic inch of the motor. Small carb means torque but i would think you have more than you need. bigger carb for top end. Did you say Blackhawk? Is that going to stand up in front of that monster? Do you own anything that is not a rare artifact?

4.560x4.560x4.250x.7854x8=555 ci
4.560x4.560x4.375x.7854x8=571.5 ci raceman you must have a 4.375 stroke

Raceman, what gear ratio and props are you running on the Hawk? What rpm have you been running it to? I am wondering just how much HP and TQ I can run into mine and have it live.

Raceman

Good eye Ken. That was a typo which I corrected. I meant to say 4 3/8 stroke. Sometimes my brain and fingers don't jive when I'm typin'. My 540 has the 4 1/4 inch stroke and I guess I had that in the back of my mind. The 540 I have was done with a 502 punched .030 to 4.5, then a 4 1/4 crank added. The old Merc HP 575/540 was done with a 4 3/8 stroke and smaller bore if I remember right. I've got one more old gen IV bowtie block that was a 502 Mercruiser and although I bought a rotating assembly to make it a 540, I've been thinkin' about doing a short deck 572 with the 4 3/8 stroke and 4.560 bore combo. Many people feel like the 4 1/2 X 4 1/2 combo in a shortdeck block causes the rod angle to be too extreme, but seems like the 4 3/8 might be do-able.

AP, my Blackhawk is a 1.5:1. I wish I'd found one of the 1.36's when I got this one. I've got a pair of 29's and 31's and usually run the 31's. It'll only turn them about 5400 as opposed to over 5600 with the 29's. I don't think Merc ever made any taller wheels for em than the 31's. I think they'll take a lot of power if you don't hammer em and bounce em in and out of the water at WOT. Our lake is calm enough that I don't ever do that to my stuff.

Ken,
you sure have a different way to calculate CID.
I've always used 3.14 x radius x radius x stroke x # of cyls.
Now that I looked at it, your factor keeps you from having to divide the bore in half.
BTW, I'll try to get over to see you with my 2.4 heads soon.

Raceman,
Autoweek mag had a great article on Jay Leno last week. He has your 572 in a 55 Buick, on Corvette suspension. He said he chased a Porsche 911 thru the canyon and the guy kept looking in his mirror like "WTF?!"

Raceman

Yeah, I saw that. I take AutoWeek too, in addition to about a dozen other car books. They also had the Buick and Jay on one of the car shows on TV........... the one with Dennis with the curly mustache. It's a cool car.

But does the wife know Merc is making this newfangled great big outboard now...and it even has a compressor thingy on it to make it go faster...

Of course, you can't help that delivery guy screwing up again..."Supposed to be a 9.9 kicker...what is this big thing that says 275 on it?" :o "Jeez, it was so big we couldn't even lift it back in his truck and had to leave it here..."

:D
