dad has a 97 f350 4x4 crew cab 8ft box with powerstroke 7.3 l 5spd with overdrive but in overdrive doing 70 the truck is spinnin 24-2600 rpms

first gear is totally useless you make around 5 feet before you have to shift i mean i know it was built for towing but its way overkill!

starting off in second all the time and you dont even have to give the truck any gas you can just let the clutch out and away you go barely chuggs!

i was wondering if any one has changed the gear in the rear axel to drop rpm when on the high way and make first gear useful?

any one know the stock gear in the rear of this truck?

has any one tried the banks power system in this truck its suppose to be great

I believe that the standard gear was a 3.73 with 4.10's being optional. Sounds like 4.10's to me.

Your truck has a 4:10 gear.

Both 3:55 and 3:73 were available in '97 along with your 4:10. The 3:55 has since been discontinued. Probably $1500.00 or so for a gear change, just guessing though.

Banks stuff works great and dont kill the motor like most all others do. Banks is first class all the way.

Sure, you can still buy 3.73's and 3.55's and maybe even lower gears for it. I have a bud with a 97 PS w/3.55's and it cruises great at 85mph. :)

no options from the factory. 4:10's or nothing. The 1/2 tons had optional gearing. Put a taller tire on it. A 35" tire will bring the rpm's down, unless it's a 2wd. That engine makes plenty of power, just don't hold you breath on the torque converter/trans combo. Jay
