View Full Version : propshaft/thrust washers
The thrust washer should bottom out of the tapered part of the shaft, right? I just bought a prop, and the included washer seems to bottom out on the base of the shaft, where the seals and stuff are. It looks as if there's a gap in the center where it's supposed to be tight against the taper. I wiped grease on the back of it, and after putting it on and twisting it, it scribes a clean circle in the grease. Will this damege the propshaft, case, bearing or seal? I tried out other props with different washers recently, and this may have happened before unnoticed. My gearcase is now leaking a little lube, so it's definitely in need of a seal. Was the washer's taper worn down? Could I have done any damage, including to the seal, by running it with a washer bottomed out against the base of the shaft seal?
The thrust washer is not supposed to be in that far if I under stand what you are saying. It sounds like the washer is warn out or its got the wrong size taper.

If it was a Yamaha thrust washer, it will run too deep. You will need to machine some off the front side where it touchs the carrier. You'r yamaha dealer probably has a box full of already machined one's ready to buy. The Yamaha taper is correct.
My local marina sells mostly pontoon boat motors and cheap props. Maybe they will have a washer for me. What type of washer/(part no.?) should be used with a small-hub Trophy plus?
So, could I have screwed up the propshaft seal if the last prop I ran had the wrong washer?
thanks.

That Thrust washer you got from me is new. I ran that same one on my boat 3 weeks ago just fine, with plenty of clearance. It sounds like your fixing to break a prop shaft. My brother had that happen 2 months ago, with what you are describing. Have it checked out!
Thanks for the reply, Dana. I dunno, the larger diameter washer for my 28" chopper works just fine, sitting pretty on the taper. The one I got with Keith's Trophy spins on the base. I didn't want to damage it by running it like that, and I didn't feel like messing with it. I didn't even get the chance to try the prop. I was frustrated by the gear lube leak, the washer issue, and the lousy weather. I put my chopper back on and ran like hell to the ramp. Yep, I pulled it out. I'm all done for this year.
