Any one know of a way to fasten wiring without screws? I'm planning on testing those plastic pads for wiring ties but if this is already known I can skip it.
The adhesive on them has always given out so plan on doing a panel with some different glues and submerging it for a week with a little load on them.
Adhesive alone.
adhesive coated with RTV - was told at work this works but doubt it.
5 minute epoxy
Hi temp hot glue
super adhesive like GOOP
This is for the anal wiring method where each wire is fastened all by itself.
are you referring to just tying up and fastening wiring and such? Hot glue is a no-no for any smooth surface. Glue "sticks." Adhesive "bonds." Never underestiumate the power of super glue. Yep. Cyanoacrylate, aka CA. It's fantastic stuff. It will stick to most surfaces except polypropylene and other "waxy" plastics. Instead of the foam 2-sided adhesive tape on the square backs of the wiring ties, peel it off and use medium viscosity super glue instead. Get the companion amine accelerator for it for instant bonding and hardening. Don't wet one side with it first though, it will actually "resist" this side from bonding! Get the glue on both sides, then spray the accel onto one and mash them together quickly. Also, CA will develop an instantaneous bond without the accelerator whenever a thin layer is squeezed between two surfaces, this is one of the coolest things about it. CA becomes a very hard, brittle plastic when it hardens. It is a poor structural filler. The less adhesive between the two bonded surfaces, the stronger the bond between them. Water shouldn't affect the bond once it's hardened. Heat over 150 F and sunlight WILL break down the CA plastic and make it more brittle and weak.
Acetone is a good prep, and is also the only solvent that comes to mind that will dissolve hardened CA.
3m 5200!
If you are gluing these things under the gunwale(sp) it will fill in the gaps behind the wire tie plates due to the rough surface.

If ya dont think 3M 5200 is strong, just try to take off a jackplate that was "sealed up" with it. You may remove some gelcoat with it.

Dave I have had good and bad luck with those pads. A good samd with 220 and an acetone wipe and they have stayed on pretty good in some places. Not so good in others....might have been a surface prep thing. The next time I think I'll stick them where I want them and run a fine bead of 4200 around them.

David did you use just the sticky type? I have never had them stick for long and at work I just run a bead of RTV over any wires that are in the way. That isn't difficult enough for the boat though.
The ones planning to use are the screw type so don't have to scrape tape off.

These got a sticky back and screw holes.
