Teach these boys not to have threads on parts that are bearing weight too. Get a bolt with some shoulder.

These actually had shoulders..... you can see the edge on the top port bolt.... still somewhat of a question how they got that far though..... they were new bolts & locknuts..... I can see how one might break ( ala Mongo style ).... but to have a "locknut" back off is still a ???? in my mind. Mind you, this was maybe on ten total hours of running...... I guess Lake Tarpon is living up to it's name:eek:

But it looks pretty stubby. What Mongos torque elbow set at 550??

Most hardware nuts are NOT G8, they must be special ordered from a fastener supplier. Your chain is only as good as the weakest link. I see guys use G8 bolts with crap nuts all the time. You must use all G8 for it to work.

Guys that run in Salt water can't, shouldn't, and/or don't like to use grade 8 bolts.

Just goes to show how important it is that we check all this stuff every time we run it. I wonder how many people who've lost skegs could've prevented it with a close examination before every time out. I've seen a couple of mid sections break around exhaust relief holes too. I'd be willing to bet they showed cracks before they failed completely.

It does look like the bolts shoulder would only be long enough to pass thru the motors' clamp, not the plate too.

You mentioned lock nuts. I personally shy away from the Nylock type anymore. My way of thinking is with the nylon inserts, you don't have the metal to metal contact as you would from a full metal nut and bolts' contact surface. I also try to double nut were possible.

Glad you caught that when ya did, nobody needs a screaming madly motor tossed up in the back of their bote.
Senn some real fugly pictures of a couple guys that got chewed up bad by the motor coming back up into the boat with em.....FUGLY chit...

I would use fine thread too. That course thread is harder to get tight without overtightening.

Hey Lake Tarpon Boys .Is it posible some lowlife was trying to steal your stuff ? Sure hate to think this is going on . If not try double nutting & loctite . Also works good on all your small hardware . Good luck ,Hope to see ya'll soon . Who has the vidio from Clermont from behind the TIKIBAR ? Whould like to get a copy if posible . Maybe if some of ya'll come to Eustis some one could bring it . Thanks . Richard Martin

Sure sounds like an out of balance something to me. Take a hard look at the prop shaft-like dial indicator, check prop balance-at least on a shaft on knife edges if not spin balanced, flywheel checked, upper main bearing and or loose cap bolts, check/torque
all jack plate and engine bolts often.

I'm with Gordie. I only use Grade 8 bolts now. I got tired of always snugging up the S/S bolts. I use Grade 8 bolts and S/S nylock nuts and have NEVER had a problem. I run in fresh water, not salt. The gr 8 may discolor, but they dont corrode with fresh water use. Rain doesnt hurt them either. I have been slammed on this subject before but I'm sticking with what has worked for me. I always check the tightness before going out but I've NEVER had to tighten them. :)

Just use some red thread lock.

I tried that but Lock-tite doesn't do much. (Tried double nuts to)The reason the bolts need to be retightened is they stretch rather than having the nut back off. Also, I have seen S/S bolts snap, but never a grade 8 and locktite won't keep that from happening. I read in an article that John Tiger used Gr 8 bolts, I tried it and have stuck with it ever since. I use S/S washers and nylock nuts. I have never had a stainless nut strip off so no reason to go with the Gr 8 nuts.
