I just took delivery of Rick Conklin's yellow SS2000. Thanks Rick. Thanks Greg for the site. Without S&F I would never have known about Rick's boat.

My plan is to rig it with my XR4. Anyone want to buy a Virage?

Q1

Should I use my 8" Detwhiler (sp?) hydraulic plate or the 10" manual plate that came with the boat. The hydraulic plate is much heavier than the manual plate. But by my math the overall CG is further rear with 10" than 8" even allowing for the extra jackplate weight. The XR4 gearcase is a little fragile and I would like to keep the motor low most of the time to protect it. Having a hydraulic plate makes it much easier to raise the motor when I do want to go fast. I'm just a bit concerned about weight.

Q2

My current propellers are a 24" laser (circa 1993, I think its a laser 1) and a 26" Hoss Hyperdrive Hi-lift. Will these props be OK for learning the boat?

Q3

What sort of top end prop would be appropriate? I'm not even sure I'll need one this year. It depends how fast I can learn to drive the SS2000. Would a 4 blade be more stable?

Q4

Any suggestions for mounting a ski pilon?

thanks

David:)

IF YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT AN ALLISON SS2000, I HAVE ONE POWERED WITH A HIGHLY MODIFIED 2.5. I HAD A GOOD DISCUSSION WHEN RIGGING MY BOAT WITH LEE SANDERSON OF SANDERSON MARINE IN RICHMOND VA. HE RUNS ONE OF THESE BOATS IN THE LAKE RACER CLASS ODBA. HIS ADVICE ON MOTOR HEIGHT 1/4 INCH BELOW THE PAD REALLY CALMED MY BOAT DOWN. THE PROP OF CHOICE IS A MERCURY LIGHTNING ET. I`M STILL FEELING MY BOAT OUT IT RUNS BEST FLAT WHICH IS VERY DIFFERENT FROM MY HYDROSTREAM VIKING. ALSO WEIGHT IN THE REAR OF THE BOAT MAKES ALOT OF DIFFERENCE IT SEEMS MUCH EASIER TO HANDLE WITH A 1/4 TANK OF FUEL COMPARED TO A FULL TANK. IT HOLD 25 GALS.
GOOD LUCK
JOE

This is my first post,
Someone finally asked a question that I have some experience in answering to. SS2000 setup - I run one and it's the only Allison that I've ever driven. Glenn Reynolds set it up - 225 Mariner Super Magnum (slightly modified) 20" mid, 1.87 gear, SportsMaster case.
I'm not familiar with your motor - XR4, but 1/4" to 1/2" below is a good height to start until you learn to deal with the wheel torque and balancing on the pad.
The setback should be no more than 9" for a 350# motor.
Props - these hulls don't like a prop that lifts - the hull will provide all the lift you need - I run Hoss Triton's, 30 & 32 pitch. I learned to drive with a 26 Trophy, but thru hub 4 blades ain't gonna be your performance wheel.
Can't help with the pylon, maybe somebody else that ski's will jump in.
Let me know if I can be of any help.

David, check the photos on the thread XR2002 in General discussion and scroll to pics of my 2002 Ally,I believe you could do the same with a SS2000,I had a 1999 SS2000 and was planning on the same install but sold hull. When done it appears like factory GS 2003.I will pull the post TTT so its easier to find.
Good luck Rolf
