POS motor with no application IMO I/O's are even better IMHO

Still waiting to hear a single report from any kind of performance hull. Something like a Velocity 22 or any of the offshore SOB types. The absence of infomation after two years suggests they have serious shortcomings for the application. But it sounds like they are a nice engine for a big offshore fishing rig.

A charter boat owner just switched from twin 225 Opti's to 250 Verado's. He likes the steering/shifting on the Verado but that's about it. Fuel is equal to the Opti's and so is the power. Didn't think it was worth the $40+k investment.

Too heavy for most SOB boats, a 22 progression or activator maby...my 300xp evinrude was heavy enough on the 21 superboat. The verado weighs around 600 if im correct ?

hmmmmm went from 450 to 500 hp..... same power (ie speed).... uses same ammount of fuel.... and spent 43K to re rig and repower for same performance.... not  by my standards....

again do they have an application.......????????>.......??????........

250 horse... 720+#'s... $20,000 a copy.... Still gets it's ass kicked by an BMC. Hmmmmmm... Sounds like Mercury made the right decision there don't it! LOL! I don't think that Verado will ever be much of a motor...

It's interesting and maybe someone will put enough boost in it to run OK but the exhaust is painfully restrictive(from all I hear) and could not be cut-off & replaced with a less restrictive system. It's never be a replacement option for those with 2.5 gen motors... I'll take a 2.5 200 or a Pro Vee200 anyday over that Verado...

I know everone here is talking about the 200 hp motors and up. I would love to get a hold of the 175 and see how it is on an 18 ft bass hull. I think it would be suprising but I may be wrong.

How about a new poll, E-tec vs. Verado. For bass boats and sport boats like the Progression, Intimidator, Tuff, Hydrostream.

I am a merc guy, and all my dealer friends are too, none have a lot goot to say about them. If they break, you cannot fix them, and at 720 lbs the are starting to make the OMC V8's look light.

fourstokes are great for some stuff but the weight is a problem for most of us here, I own a honda crf450r and it is light weight and best bike I have ever owned but maintenance is 2-3 times more than good old 2 strokes, and if you break a 4 stroke outboard you better hold on tight for the bill, the new e-tec is simple and reliable and in my opinion going to be around for a long time, I think merc is throwing in the towl too early on 2 strokes, I hope brp sells the rights to the ficht injections system to the big four in motorcycles so that we dont have to say good bye to all 2 stroke dirt-bikes. I do think for a big heavy fourstroke that the verado is a good motor just not right for me.

only problem with that is a 300 weighs less than the 175 verado.....490 lbs to 525

Not too far from my thinking. So much potential, but the version they gave could easily be ligher had have more hP, but it does not have either. Why? Decent replacement for the IO's if that is the market they want, but not doing a lot for me. Maybe miami 2006 boat show will have a few surprises for us.

problem is they use more fuel than say a 260 5.7L I/O and weigh close to the same..........

My xflow 200 weighs about 385#. Where is all this extra weight coming from on all makes of outboards?

they weight way to much and i think there ugly looking, the evinrude is alot lighter and looks way better, the E tec is the way to go

I personally do not see any application of this engine for high performance use, except perhaps on heavier offshore style boats.

Speed and performance are obtained 3 ways - light weight, setup and high power, in that order IMHO. That is, the lighter the weight, the less power you need for a given result. Same with cars and aircraft. Starting with a horribly overweight powerplant like the Verado on a performance rig makes no sense; to me, anyway.

I think the main competition for the Verado is the Honda, not the E-tec. BMC is now alone out front.

Just got back from our merc dealer. He was just buckling up another twin 250 hp Verado charter boat. He asked me my guess on a replacement powerhead cost. I said , "$10,000.00". He said just over $11,000.00. They won't send a short block, just drop-on's. If you get one, sell it before the warrenty runs out. I'm guessing a shop can't rebuild them either. OUCH!!!!

I was told the same, other than a few external repairs that is the end of it for the dealer. They are throw away motors.

...but.....what if they don't break??

I'm withholding my opinion until the commercial guys have at least a year or so of experience with them. I've been told 750hrs is about the limit for the Optimax....what if the Verado delivers several thousand hours of dependable performance in a commercial application? The homeland security boats are putting a ton of hours on the V-6 Hondas with very few problems...just what I hear from folks connected with SAFE boats...built here in Washington State.

Clearly the current crop of Verado is not aimed at the screamandfly crowd...but no doubt Merc will get to that market before too long. In the meantime, the 200XS and 250 XS deliver alot of EPA legal performance.

P.S. I just test ran a 2005 175 Optimax that I rigged on an 18 ft. low profile ski boat. Very responsive engine with very impressive economy. I liked it alot.

it has a roots style blower on it... blower seals wont last that long..once thay go boost goes... no boost no power... no power customer complains... no parts... 11K down the tubes for new drop on... rather than a rebuild of supercharger...

I save 6" pieces of steel in case I can still use 'em. I still have a set of kingpins for a Datsun truck I had 20 yrs ago.
