I have a Garmin Etrex and I cant get it to velcro to anything b/c of the back on it. I've seen some that are black and a little longer than the Etrex that are flat on the back. Is it a Magellan? What model is it? I know some of you have them by the pictures that have been taken.:D :D

Check out the Garmin site. They have an inexpensive "marine mount" for the Etrex series. I got one from GPS Central (Canadian webstore) and it works great.

I've got the dash mount for my GPS-V. Check this page for all the options on your Etrex: http://www.gpscity.com/gps/brados/7025.2.12559713923867610980/etrex.html

Keith,
I ordered the unit cradle. I think I can put some 3M double sided tape on the back and attach it to the dash with no prob. That way no drilling of holes in the boat.:D

Thanks, I had no idea they had that much stuff for the little Etrex.

I have a Garmin Etrex Vista. I don't have it velcroed to anything, I susually put it in my pocket, lol.

My dad seen that Steve Zuckerman had some super duty velcro on his GPS on his 1/4Master. I think I have some of it around here that will hold it if you want some. What's the back of yours look like?

I use a Garmin E-Trex and got tired of it bouncing on the floor. I didnt really like the mounts garmin sells for my dash so i got the cell phone type case with a belt clip. The clip goes right on one of the spokes of my steering wheel hub, or on my belt if I'm hiking. :D

The velcro isn't the problem.......I've tried all kinds, even bought some "dual lock" from 3M that works the best but the back of the etrex is just odd shaped and the velcro does'nt stick well. I just purchased the cradle for it and I'm gonna try something with it when it gets here.

Thanks for the replies:D

looks like a Ram which is what I picked but no one had it??
Called 4 of their listed dealers including west Marine and they did'nt have it!
Will mount to dash and it has double pivot points so I can position it so I can read it easily.
Thanks for your help guys!

I have an Etrex Vista, I have the "cell phone style" neoprene/vinyl/velcro "carrying case" cover for it. ($11) Clear vinyl window keeps the display from getting scratched too. Has a belt clip on the back that I clip to one of the steering wheel spokes. Stays out of the way, always visible, no holes to drill.

Thats' the company I ordered my unit from. Great prices, fast shipping. There's a "marine mount" on the page listed above, for $26. Looks nice.

The Vista is $238 on their site right now.

for mounting to a steering wheel spoke but the cockpit in my Vector gets pretty violent some times and I'm not sure a belt clip would hold it to the wheel.
I will buy/try one though.

I suggest a float -or tether, on any of these hand helds. Mine dove over the side and was able to disassemble and dry out. Thing is it may not have taken on water if it hadn't sunk in 5' of water. I almost didn't find it too.

I havn't tested it yet, but I'm willing to bet that the neoprene cover I posted might help with that. If it doesn't float an Etrex, I'll bet it would help it sink slower! :D The Etrex series units are supposed to survive temporary submersion, although the battery compartment will still flood. But it WILL sink without any flotation. I'll test mine in the sink with the neoprene jacket sometime soon and post my findings.

They don't make this model anymore...I think it is now a Garmin 72 but you can adjust Garmin's base a number of ways. This is one.

I think its gonna work out pretty good. Liqui-Fly....That is the one I've been looking for. The guy that I bought my boat from had that model. The dash was already set up for it. Thanks for all the info guys. I'll get a pic on here as soon as i get it mounted.

The Etrex is what sunk. They are NOT water resistant much less resistive. They can easily be made so though.
The spring in the battery compartment passes right through the plastic without a seal. The rubber surround is glued on and could have been made to seal. The unit leaks at the screen and spring location. I think the switchs are pretty well sealed, but could br wrong on that, been a while.

The Etrex isn't rated for any submersion. I checked and they rate these things for spray, light submersion and submersion to a depth, I forgot is useful or not. Its some kind of submersion code on the unit or paperwork and this has to be looked up, then you have to see what the particular manufacturer considers this rating to mean. They could just tell you no submersion, 3' ... but that would be too easy.

I may be mistaken but don't the Magellan hand helds float ?

Don't have anything to compare it to but it does float and is watertite and seems to be the most inexpensive that interfaces with a computer bought it on ebay for $62.00 with shipping and even flashed it to the newest version of the software only thing thats a drawback is battery life 2 aa's last about 3-5 hours depending on how hot they are on regular nicads I get between 2.5 to 3.5 hours and if I want I can use with a cigar lighter adapter.

The manual said that the Etrex can handle a little water, but I was wondering about the spring contacts as well, they don't look to be sealed in any way.

Garman Etrex series is speced to IEC 529 IPX7 standard. This states that is is submersable for 30 min in 1 meter of water. What it dosn't say is that the unit must not move through the water and that the battery compartment will leak and must be dried out after. I assume that if it must not move through the water is has to be teleported to the 1 meter depth :D
