Here's a quick tip that can save you gelcoat cracks later on:

When drilling into gelcoated fiberglass, use a countersink to chamfer the hole before you install snaps, cleats, etc. This will prevent gelcoat cracking around the hole later on.

If your boat came equipped with snaps and other exterior fittings, do what I did and remove them all, countersink the holes, then reinstall.

No more worries about gelcoat cracks around fittings!
