No further charges. It runs off satelites put in orbit by the US Government. No fees. You can get a Garmin E-trex at Walmart for $110. If you shop around you can find them on sale for $90. If you have Popular Outdoor Outfitters in your area, thats where I saw them for $90. It will do pretty much everything you need it to do for boating purposes. Works well for camping and hiking also. If you want more features, Garmin has upgraded models with more bells and whistles.

Try to buy one that has a built-in map base. They don't go down to your local streets but will show highways (interstate and state) down to farm to market roads. And when in tracking mode it will show a dotted line where ya been. If ya get lost, just backtrack the dotted line. This works great when your on a strange to you lake and you get turned around. I have a Garmin E-Map, no longer available superseded by the E-Trex I think. I paid $150 for the E-Map when they were discontiued.

Mapping, downloadable GPSs are the only ones with hidden costs. Tax bucks paid the rest.
The CD maps cost varying amounts but have keys. You get one key with it and buy any more that are needed but not in your new area.
Those tiny little GPSs are no good.
Ya gotta get a big honkin dash mounted permanat model that shows everything. They do big letters and all kinds of info.
The map is good for showing that your about to run aground from watching it all the time.:p
It also is a dash pig taking up a lot of space.
Heres what mine should look like but with the bezel out of aluminum.

Soon we'll be running a feature on the Livorsi dash GPS gauge, including installation, etc.
