I am about ready to buy a 29 Tempest prop. from a fellow S&F member. I am just wondering if this prop will be too much for my setup. The prop has been worked for better hole shot. I think cup was added. I am running a Voyager Xt with OMC Looper about 280 Hp. I have heard that some people have tried this prop on simular hulls and couldnt barely get on plane, but they were running only 200 HP. Do I have what it takes to make this a good prop for me ?
Thanks
Lance
It might work well for your setup. Won't know till you try. On mine, I tried a 29P tempest plus, and I couldn't turn it. When I hit the throttle to try to get on plane, it just bogged down and stayed at 1800 rpm! (stock merc 200 EFI) Not enough torque guts to spool it up.
OMC's got more low-end torque anyway, don't they?
Pyro, was that with the vent plugs out?
yes, with the plugs out. The test was with one passenger. It couldn't turn it over enough RPM to pull any exhaust through the lower, so the plug holes couldn't do their job. Funny thing, cause I can plane a 29" RE3 or a 30" chopper just fine.
Even a 26" trophy would bog down with passenger load, unless I jacked it to the moon for takeoff to relieve the exhaust. Taking the plugs out of the trophy doesn't seem to help the initial takeoff, it just makes it rev higher as it lays out on plane. The over-hubs seem to spool up instantly on my rig. Passenger weight makes it ventilate for a longer period of time before it gets bite.
I've got a 30" RE3 to try this spring. If I can turn 6200 with 15% slip or 6100 with 13% slip, then I'm "there." 80 mph Vegas with stock 200. Not many around. We'll see...

Like the others it was hard to spin up out of the hole, other than that I loved everything about it. was really busy and choppy on the lake that day but ran it up to 95 or so and had very little steering torque and lifted the boat very nice. Super stable and tons of bow lift. Probably would work best on a non drilled mid with the can still in it and the vent holes on the prop opened up a bit. Hard biter out of the hole........

With 280 hp, as long as you have the torqe down low. I had to remove my neutral safety and start mine in gear, Shifting into that Tempest was like Shifting into a stump :D . Also Be careful!
That prop will lift so much Its scary.:p
