Its my understanding merc made a 2.4 modvp motor which was basically a carbed bridgeport but with oval ports. This was in the early 80's. Later they went to a different port design, made it available in carb and efi, and called it the 2.4 Bridgeport. Your 89 should be a BP, not a modvp. Can anyone else add any comments on this? (Been quite a while since I worked on, or owned a BP.):D

The oval port ModVP's (pre '86, I think) were not refered to as BP's. They had HUGE oval exhaust ports and ran well. As mentioned the "bridge" was added for durability, specifically to prevent ring hang up.
