I didn't want to hijack imq707s' thread so I'm posting this one.
My '86 STV Procomp has the letter "K" in the HIN and it's not a date code. Anybody know what it means?

I don't know what the abbreviations for STV models are, but these are the instructions for the HIN:
ABC xxxxx A1 01
First three letters: Manufacturer's code, three letters assigned by the Coast Guard for each boat maker
Next five: Model type and # made (example: SKI05, for SKI RACER MODEL, fifth one built) This could be three letters and two numbers, or two letters and three numbers, etc.
Next two: Month built (in alpha; A=Jan) and the last digit of year boat was actually built (2001)
Next two: Last two numbers of the *model year (2001)

Thanks BK, I've got it all figgered out except for the "K".
It's SODoooXXXK786 - SOD (Summerford code) 000XXX (serial nr.) K (?) 786 (date code)

K would be november in BK's code; the 11th month. My STV has a code of SOD00376F191 Must be the 376th built in 91 june and 91 model year. Wonder what SOD stands for summerford something. Does the 00 mean anything. Mine says raceboat above it do they all say that?

upon further review, that would make yours an 86 model built in nov of 87?????? That can't be right! Now I'm confused.

The way I read it, the SOD is the USCG mfg's code for SummerfOrD = SOD. Your hull nr. is 376 and it was built January, 1991 (191).
Somebody call and wake Roark Summerford up and ask him what tha hell it all means!

Mine would be the 282nd built in january of 90. I think the number before the year might be the day but is zero on mine.
I imagine the new Euros would have both a different SOD and OO since triad and model?
A boat built January of 1990, would have the last 4 digits of:
A090
But the CG did change this method of arriving at a HIN from time to time. And for a long time, a boat built after Aug 15th would be called a model for the upcoming year. Built prior to Aug 15th, it would be a model of the actual year built. I think that has changed a bit since 1997.
If Techno's boat was built in Sept, then his last four digits would be:
I091
This image below shows HIN's *before* 1984.
http://www.boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/pre841.gif
or
http://www.boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/pre842.gif
Back then, the months started with August:
AUG - A
SEP - B
OCT - C
And so on....
And HIN's after 1984 would look like this:
http://www.boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/aft84.gif
The months changed so that January would start:
JAN = A
FEB = B
MAR = C
and so forth....
Here's the page to look up the Manufacturers MIC code:

Hey, thanks BK...
After looking at the post 1984 format, I understand. Mine was built June 7, 1986.
The HIN also has "Race Boat" at the end of it.

Hooty,
They don't use days; only months and years.
If your last four numbers are:
F786
Then that would translate to:
Built June of 1987, model year 1986.
If your HIN ends with
K786
that would be:
Built November 1987, model 1986 ??
Which sounds like it could be a transposition?? The model year should always be the same or higher than yr built, but sometimes there are boo boos.

Hey Bits & Pieces, My HIN has "Raceboat" on the end of it but if your boat doesn't have a HIN, better have a look at this.
U.S. Coast Guard (http://www.uscgboating.org/regulations/boatbuilder/part1/reg33_181_2a.htm)
I don' know Raceman. You see what we see.

"When the goin' gets weird, the weird turn pro."
Maybe the person setting the HIN strip transposed the numbers in error. That would be my guess.
If the boat was built in Nov 87, then the model year would be 1988, not 1986. So, there's an error somewhere.

BK,
There wasn't a strip to set. The number was etched/engraved into the hull after it was pulled.
