Any of you guys remember a tricked out boat Starcraft made for a few years? I was just a kid when they were making them, so I don't remember much. As a child, I actually had a plastic toy replica of one of these, complete with a Johnson GT200 and spinning prop. They were a LOT like a HS Vegas XT, with a vee in the center, and straight tunnel sponsons on either side. It had a pointed bow, and was 18 or 20 feet, I believe. I haven't heard mention of one on the board. What was it, when did they make it, and who's got a picture of one?

Hey

Flat out's son still has that toy!

Can't remember the Starcraft name but it was a "canard wing" style like a Mirage 1/4Master

Also another company made a copy of it (late 80's ??) and it was called a VP-1. Yes they were 20' long

Apparently the Boats were heavy and did not have great performance...Too bad cause it sure looked cool!

I have an original cataloge. I still have the toy boats, my kids play with them. I still have a new one in the box . They keep asking me for it. A real cool looking boat. It was designed by Art Carlson. The first year as '84 than in'85 they added a small radar type wing. They also had a CPS 15 & 17 but they were more conventional. I don't know how long they were made. I beleive another company may have aquired the mold and built a few. I saw one on a video of a radar run near Ottawa, Canada. They ran nose high, seemed quick. Anyone know about these boats or seen one recently? CPS= Competiton Performance Series

I can remember an old Trailer Boats issue with a blue one equipped with a wing and a limited edition Johnson. Hotboat had a yellow stern drive one for sale recently. Man they were cool. I'm pretty sure Carlson had something to do with them too. LF

Ah, yes, that model number sounds familiar now. I remember what the hulls looked like, I'm surprised that Howard Pipkorn didn't sue their pants off. They were similar to the Vegas XT, except that the sponsons were straight and parallel, instead of curved and wrapping around the underside of the bow.
HEY FLAT-OUT, wanna sell me the toy in the box??? That's real cool, it would be neat to have one again like back-in-the-day. I remember there being a blue model and a red model, they came in an open-front cardboard box, held in by plastic box straps. Cool stuff. Thanks for all the info on the subject.

The kids play with two w/white decks and red bottoms and the one with the red deck and white bottom is staying in the box. I love my toys. You can play with the little ones in the winter when our Canadian lakes are better suited for snowmobiling.

You know...at dinner, i was discussing this Starcraft 20' CPS, and suddenly I remembered a boat a friend of mine was pit-crewing for at the Parker enduro one year -- late 80's -- it was all white and was so big, that they had nicknamed it the "SS Enterprise".

I may be wrong, but I think the driver's were Californians Nick and Pat Murphy. (brother's of "air-chair" inventor, Mike Murphy)

Maybe I can find more info on this.....

I wonder if they are still in business. They give Art Carlson credit for the design

The Starcraft was known as the flying wedge, problem was it was not very fast and porposed.

The boat Murphy ran at parker was built by George Veneries and called a triton, built in three sizes 21, 23, 30, I helped Pat with the 23 he ran at Parker with a v8 on the back.

I have been "talking" (emailing) a guy that has one with a crossflow on it. From the pics he sent me, it is a very nice example. If I remember right, he said it would run between 85 and 90. Sent him an e, maybe he will reply.

That is definately one of the coolest starcrafts ever built, as far as looks go. I remember them and the toys as well, still have a blue toy. They must have been out for a while before I got mine, it has a plastic XP300 V8 on it (had it in the tub with me last night!)
They must have know it needed more power or something. A neighbor of mine used to own a real '86 red one with a 2.4 EFI on it. He traded it away and it showed up at a local dealer a few years back. I had the chance to take it out on the lake and the thing was a dog. It Would barely turn 65 at about 7K. I tried to buy the thing, but too much $. As far a tunnel goes I am not sure it should be classified as that. More like a crappy vee with outriggers. Don't get me wrong, I love the look of the boat, definately different, but heavy and slow is not the way to go.
I don't know much about the VP1's produced later.

I'm dead serious, if someone has one of the toy models like new or in the box, I WILL BUY IT! Those are wicked!

I think the ones I had when I was a kid had either an XP150/GT150 or XP200/GT200.

LakeRacer99

Hey, I am not sure if I even have that toy any more and I know they were worn, I had both a red on and a blue one. I have the 3.6XP that was on the blue one in my hand right now.
I don't know if you remember or not, the same company produced a ctoy replica of the Glastron GT-150 with an XP150 and one with a 120 V$ or you could get the "GT" versions if you bought the red and white ones. I still have a blue and grey GT-150 toy in good condition, not for sale though.
The company that produced these was Processed Plastic Co. Mongomery, Ill 60538, that is what is embossed in the floor of the boat.
Try searching for the company on the net.
Good luck to ya.

And I thought I was getting too big for my toy boats...

hey guys, after several weeks of trying I can now join in.
I have one of the boats you are talking about, 1985 Starcraft CPS 20 1985 2.6 gt mod @ LAND&SEA. I was having lots of trouble with porpoiseing until I learned how to drive it. I did however get it to go 90 mph with 3 adults and it was very stable and flat.
I was trying different jets & timing when # 6 cyl stuck @ 6700. I let it cool for a bit and putted home. Going to re-build and try for 100 mph. This boat is also very good in rough water with monster waves.

LakeRacer99
10-09-2001, 12:52 PM
Wow, 90mph thats pretty good. I bet it does handle the waves well. There must have been something wrong withthe one I drove, maybe full of water or something.
I think you should post some pictures of your boat. i can honestly say I haven't seen one of these boats on the internet and they are definately different.
Good luck for the 100mph, maybe you might be able to move that crossflow over and put another one right next to it. Just kidding.
Good luck.

The original boat the Starcraft was copied from was a 30' Triton made by George Veneries in California. (as Racer stated in his post) In the early '80's I went to CA to test ride the then "top secret" 30 footer. George showed me plans he had to produce a 23' and was thinking about a 21'. The 30 was intended for the offshore race circuit where it failed to perform. The boat was downright dangerous. The narrow v bow did not provide enough lift, (aero- dynamic or hydro -dynamic) to carry itself between ocean swells. It had a tendency to spear any wave it encountered. If I remember correctly, during it's maiden offshore race the boat never made it out of the harbor without burying its nose in a wake and spinning out. I can't see that the smaller versions would be any safer. This is one hull design that looks best on the trailer. It is the only safe place for it !!

Does anyone have any pictures of the TRITON ? Any size? I thought I had a photo of the Triton that we called the "SS Enterprise" from the Parker Enduro, but I was wrong. (The wrong V-8.)

The boat I have a picture of was Ron Hill's blue/white Eliminator V-8.

I had factory spec sheets and brochures on the Triton and a bunch of other 70's and 80's boats. When I moved to Florida 9 years ago I left them all up north......only to regret it now.

The cps 20,

Find 90 hard to believe when the one at powerboat test went 70 and one I drove only went 72 in salt water. As far as the triton and its first race I was in the boat and we were leading our class when a tie rod broke. Crashed it in the second race also leading, finished second in third race.

Both the triton and the cps were copies of a boat originally built in England, the same designer did the drawings of the triton.

Both of these boats were a handful and unpredictable.

Nice looking boat, I think I have an issue of Trailer Boats from '86 or so that displayed a blue CPS20 with the limited edition 150 v6 Evinrude (the one with the polished gearcase) behind a blue IROC Camaro. A very sharp package.

BK...
I will have to look but I think I may have a magazine ad with the Triton, If I remember it was all white and had 2 or 3 of the Evinrude OZ motors on it. I will look.

Did you just sell that boat last month on eBay?

rev.ronnie
11-06-2011, 12:14 AM
The thing with a lot of Carlson's designs was his tendency to extend the boat past the motor on each side. It was like the motor was pushed into the stern of the boat. The CVX type boats were the same. You couldn't get enough setback on less you used a Gill type bracket. I wonder what the thought was, or if it was just pure styling.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Project-boat-Art-Carlson-CPS-20-/250889316724?pt=Power_Motorboats&hash=item3a6a2b2974#ht_500wt_948

Wow, old thread but a great one. I have the CPS 20 toy with the red hull and white deck with yellow stickers and 3.6 Johnson on it. Also have the Glastron with the red deck and white hull and a 75 Johnson 3 banger on it. The decals are no longer on that one. My dad trimmed the edges off of the plastic tabs that held the cowl on that one so that the cowl could be taken on and off, and we stuck a small gear from something in there to look like a flywheel. Neither toy are for sale :).

I saw a red CPS 20 with the wing and either a V-8 or a GT 200 being test run on our lake back in the day. I was 9 years old so I can't say for sure, but I remember the motor was huge. The local dealer was a Starcraft and Johnson dealer. We were in awe, but I remember the dealer telling us that they had had some problems with the transoms breaking off on them. I'm pretty sure it was in '85 because I remember the motor had the graphics that were in the "White Heat" Johnson catalog from '85 that we were drooling over.

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

I miss those toy CPS20's, I once had both blue and red. They were my favorites. When I was a little kid growing up on the lake, I would tie a knot in a 4 foot piece of string, tuck the knot between the hull and deck under the bow, and pull those boats through the shallow water at a high rate of speed. I usually tucked a small stone under the front of the motor cowl to hold the motor down in the water with a little positive trim to generate some roost. My dad sliced the trailing edges of the prop so I could run a cleaver. Sometimes I would take a frog or two for a terrifying boat ride.

I never knew those toys were real boats. It was by far one of my brothers and mine favorite toys when we were little. We used to drag them all over the house and the lower units would get caught in the carpet and break the motors off so we started cutting the lowers off. They would still get broken somehow or another. Heres the collection we amassed that I still have left and a few other toys that were in the same box.

Stamped in the bottom of the CPS20 it says,

BERGMAN MFG. & TRAD. CO.
DIV. OF PROCESSED PLASTIC CO.
MONTGOMERY IL 60538
MADE IN U.S.A.
3570

The bass boat pictured above says the same thing except number 3550 at the bottom and the red and white Glastron says 3560 on the inside in the floor. The trailers that I have are made for all 3 boats.

DROOL... Yes, like that. I seriously still want one of these for my shelf. These were my favorite toys as a kid. I had the red and white one with the Johnson motor too. I probably wore out and broke a half-dozen of them when I was a boy. Dad helped me cut the prop like a cleaver. I liked to jam the motor into positive-trim position and tuck a string under the bow so I could drag it through the shallow water while I ran at high speed. Those were my first speed boats. I want one back again!

I have one, bought it with no motor. I only have a Mercury 115 but wanted to try the boat. About 45 mph was the best we could do, but it would corner on a dime, wide open, lol. A very stable boat and I would say a great design, for teens to operate on the lake with this lesser power. If I could ever locate a cheap 200hp plus outboard, I would try it with trim tabs to stop the porpoising. There is also a step in the hull, just ahead of the motor, that I intend to fill in. I am not sure why Carlson designed this into the hull, but I believe the bottom of the boat needs to remain true, to the motor, and beyond to the sides of the motor. That is what sold me on this design.
