Anyone have a trick to getting the retaining pin out of the center cylinder of a Merc trim pump? It's hard to get a good swing on a punch to get it out. Are the pins hard or can I drill it? David

They are hard, but you can drill them out. Be careful since you are drilling the hardest part of the assembly and can slide off into the outer part.

Don't drill dat thang!!! Remember tha famous words of Mr Evinrude..."When in doubt...WHOOP it out"...I no U kan do it, Yo wife said U wuz good at Whoop'in lil thangs!!!! Yo Hero, REX:D
I would be careful with the drilling thing; you don’t want to get off center and mess up the hole. If you can get a drill in there you should be able to get a long punch in too. Trim the motor down all the way and go in from the front, pound it out to the back.

I'll give it a shot with the big ballpeen. LF
I’m not really recommending this but one time when I could only get the pin out ½ way I took a large punch and drove the ram pivot pin out shirring off the little keeper pin.

I really didn't lean into it last night. I'm going to lower it down and come at it from the front. Seems like there should be a threaded allen head there instead if this pain in the arse pin. LF
That’s what I put back in when I did my Silverwing last month.

Get this after purchasing a suitable punch and larger ball peen I discovered something. After baging for a bit I decided to do it the caveman way and went directly for the main pin. What do you know...it drove right out. There was no retaining pin to begin with...I was banging on the shaft. Don't tease I'm working with limited light in the garage right now (just moved in). So everything is in and works. As for using an allen screw insted of a plug, John did you tap it or will the right size thread right in? LF
What I final ended up with was a stainless steel cotter pin, I think it was 3/16, not sure. The Alan has too much play.

I looked around a few local dealers for a pin then said screw it and bought a cotter pin. Thanks for the follow-up!! LF
