I swear by Merc hi-perf lube (The thick sticky green stuff) its supposed to still be good immulsified in 30% water. It wouldn't hurt to do a little research to see if any of the "off the shelf" gear lubes, synthetic or conventional are capable of the same thing.

I'd also be intersted in hearing what other guys are running.

I use the Pennzoil 100% synthetic o/b gear lube. Walmart...$7.

The Mobil synthetic automotive lube should have better lubrication properties and last much longer than Mercury's mineral lube. However, it will probably not disperse as much water.

The bottom line is: as long as your lower unit is not leaking you will be happier with the synthetic lube.

I am using the Pennzoil 75w90 marine lube and Quaker State Synchron 75w90 automotive lube. Both are 100% synthetic, and the information I have received from the manufacturer is that the Quaker State Synchron is the same product as the Itasca marine lube.
