View Full Version : The Lund blows past 50mph!

1000lbs lighter and perfect balance with the center console, the Lund crushes it's 50 mph barrier only stoped by the rev limiters. :)
Apparently someone put power packs on with limiters. They're Rapair units and the numbers are unreadable, but the motor starts to stumble around 5300 and stops at 5500. Very consistent to.
With the 19" prop it did 50mph right out of the gate. Great hole shot and up against the limiters in nothing flat. Incredibly different boat now. Even easier to tow and take in and out.
At first it handled very scary, motor was too low. Jacked it up another inch (cav plate now 2.5" above the pad) and it handles like a dream. Wants more prop. It even seems to be starting to air out because the bow is so light. It's basically a john boat now with a V6 on the back.
Still only getting 13psi water pressure. This was the most I got before the jack plate as well. The temp is staying around 120-130 now with the new pump.
Still havn't decided on the floor to use. It just has a temp floor for now. :p

Can you say "SLEEPER"??
When we talked at the Rumble you did'nt tell me you were carrying everything you own in the damn thing!!
Lose the rev limiters and add some wheel and it ought to get interesting in a big hurry!!
Was always a big fan of the HP per LB of the aluminum boats.
Keep us posted Bruce!!

Turns out it even has a pad! It's a definite flat spot in the center of the hull about 8 inches wide that runs about 2/3 the length. The new Lunds use this as well, they call it it a "Power Strake" ...
http://www.lundboats.com/html/ips_hull_.htm
but it looks like a pad to me. Maybe that's why it seems to be handling pretty well.
I need to try it w/o limiters. The XP just gets into its power band then the limiters shut the party down.

YIPPEEE YAHOOEE, Cool Runing Bruce, Glad to hear that baby screams, Went out Saturday for maiden voyage', It was real rough around Mermaid Point, But thats what I was looking for was crappy water, If its going to break, BREAK NOW. But all went well, stumbles a bit at idle, but once the pre-mix is ran through will change plugs and see if that clears it. Dont think I am getting anywhere near 50 though, Best guess w/o instruments is about 42, tops out at 5000 with 19 wheeel. That surprised me, thought I would need to go to a 21 -23. But that shows ya what I know. May have to play with engine height to get it dialed in, But will test againwith normal load, was running light on this trip. Still some odds and ends to finish up on.
Glad all went well B-man, keep in touch.

Man you picked one crappy day to go out! I couldn't believe how the wind was blowing on Saturday. If it ran that good then, it's ready! I have about 8 chum blocks in the freezer taking up space. We need to use 'em up. If it was that rough up in the bay I wonder what it was like at the SkyWay?
I'll be in the Lund this weekend Sat & Sun as a patrol boat in the Offshore race at the Pier. If you're interested in helping out let me know, can always use a second hand on the boat.

Was wondering how the project was going. At least for now there is one member on the board who runs slower than me. Sounds like you have the potential to eclipse 55 though.
May need to start yanking those heavy seats out of my rig to pick up some cheap mph. Those rot-proof seat bases made of solid nylon weigh twice as much as plywood.

I'll have to add back about around 50-100lbs for the real floor and I'm considering 1/2" treated plywood. 3/4" is too heavy. Nida Core is really amazing stuff but hard to fasten to the stringers with screws because it's hollow. They make nida core with aluminum sheet on both sides, but that's almost as heavy as 3/4" plywood. It would make fastening easier though.
1/2" plywood is fairly strong as long as you strengthen it in areas that span more than 16-20". All it takes is 2x2 underneath in those areas.
Then I have to decide on a surface i.e. carpet or texture paint.
I wanted to use deck planks but they are very heavy because they're 1" thick. I looked into wood composite 1x4 planks but they where to brittle and didn't pass lab testing.
I'm almost certain 1/2" treated plywood is the way to go. Cheap to!

Good luck sounds like you ROCK!!
By the way know anybody that wants a used boat mines up for sale for 5000.00??

Brucw, what not do foam core for floor, My buddy mad a 8 foot deck on his skiff out of 1/2 inch. Stuff is strong and light.
Just an idear, I am interested in Saturday, I will let you know later this week, Having an issue at home with water seeping up through foundation...NOT GOOD..........
As far as my flloor, I was going to carpet, but instead am going to use dri-deck, snap in place tiles that are open and let water drain . They look like waffles with the little valleys hollowed out. They use it at the ice rink and seems very durable. My floor wieghes a ton, used 3/4 ply, looking back should of used klegcell.
O well 1st time for alot of stuff, gelcoating, glassing..... But Next time My **** will look like Talons !
Give me a call ......

I did an old Glastron by filling the floor/bottom with two part foam and then laying two layers of 1/4" exterior on top of it. Layer of cloth on top of that.
Was light and bullet proof!!

Bll,
You may be able to get rid of the rev limit very easily. The most recent issue of HOT BOAT mentioned disconecting one of the plugs coming off the power pack to disable the rev limiter. I'll try to find the issue tonight and get back to you tomorrow.
I'm glad to hear the jack plate made a difference. Gives me hope that I'll get my old bucket to run. I'm waiting to have the finger ports put in. I got such a good deal I decided to get my V-6 block done along with the v-4 but I have to get a cyl. bored out in the V-6 first.
It sounds like that Lund is going to scream (or just maybe whoever is in it).

I installed the kill switch tonight.
Can I ground that black/yellow wire in the harness to kill the motor with the ignition switch in the "on" position? I know that works when the harness is disconnected from the boat but when the harness is connected do I have to make or break other circuits as well? Never needed a switch like that before :D

On your engine you can not disconnect the rev limit as the story in hot boat the two engines have different ignition. Yours is in the box only, no quick start.

racer,
Could you please explain to me what the quick start is. I guess I haven't seen it yet because I only seem to work on the old stuff.
Thanks.

Quick start is on the 88 and newer engines, the stator has an extra charge coil to power the system. Between these components and the timer base the timing is advanced at start up. Once warm is is then retarded to normal setting. Its a little more complicated with some other parts involved, but basically as stated. The 88 on rev limit is tied into the quick start, so by disabling the quick start you also loose the rev limiter.
