FC, what's with all this picture stuff? :D
Somebody asked me the same question when I posted Chris' speed run in my boat the other day. This stuff looks the same runnin' 75 that it does at 120+ in still pictures.
Actually I think 120 in an HST is pretty impressive. My partner had one with a bridgeport and it was a dog. Coulda been the motor, coulda been the setup, or the fact that the boat seemed heavy or all of the above, but that sucker wouldn't go. He never got it anywhere near a hundred and I'm not real sure about 90.
Capt.Insane-o
01-12-2004, 04:49 PM
Weight is everything in a HST. When mine was all water logged it was a dog.. it started leaking around the rear rub rail and saturated the foam in the sponsons. Went to running over 110 with a 260 to 92. I could'nt believe how much soggy foam, plywood and seats and carpet weighed out. I had a couple cleavers worked out and the added stern lift really helped out a bunch for top end, plan on some experimenting with set back and props this year, 12 was too much with the cleavers, made walk around so I ended up at 4 1/2 but its a dog off the line and through the mid range 'cause it can't pick the bow up enough to pack any air in the tunnels, but drives like a slot car at 120+. Good job there Greg, glad to see you got the efi going, was a bummer not being able to run with you at the rumble.
Impressive #'s. I'm working on mine as we speak in an attempt to lighten it up a bunch. Hoping 250 lbs.
I'm running 12 inches set back but might play with that a little this summer. Spinning a 29 rx at 6800 r's. 100 would be fun to get to.
Keep us updated. set up pics would be really neat to see.

"why is it you Americans are so extremely fast "
It's a propoganda excercise by our imperialist government to make our boats seem faster by satelite manipulation. It's a conspiracy by the radical right wingers among our leaders who think we can be "high speed police" to the rest of the world.

Pat, "Capt Insaneo" has been claiming mid 120's with his for two years.
Although when he brought it to the Rumble this yaer, he forgot to enter the GPS runs??
I think he is towing it South shortly so maybe he and Greg can have a go??
As far as the HST's go, there used to be (not sure if he's still around??) a guy in New York with an X Mod VP capsule boat runnning I believe 127 ish??
That's the fasted I've seen/heard that has been substantiated.

It's coming with, just came in from chisling/grinding the last of the crud that is coming out of it, hopefully I can score the composite board I need this week and I should have it back together pretty quickly. What prop shaft do you have on your sprtsmaster? I think you'll really like this 34, I'm trying to find the v/8 HST article that was in hotboat, they went 131 or 133? with a f1 lower and such. I don't think there is anymore left in it, just trying to keep it from falling apart, more.
gps runs? showed up just in time to see see Jeff and Warren? run. Had a 2.4 that us1 cut for, it ran 107 friday afternoon, never did really get all the bugs worked out, anyhoo aslong a there is a couple/three miles to run it'll do it, just takes some room. As for ignoring, meh, this place has gotten kinda weird as of late,so I don't log on as much, used to be more fun and less ego ish if you will, but whatever.

HST no motor
This could be the fastest non-capsule HST in the country. I have a video of a radar run at 123. This was with a 2.5/260 with a SVS and 32cc heads on PUMP GAS with stock ports.
The boat is 9 with original gel coat and has been garage kept.. It has 2 tanks in the rear (42 gallon) with an electrical switching valve. The package includes a galvanized trailer in expellant condition. Includes all the gauges except the GPS Speedo that was removed. A 3 month old Land and Sea jack plate could be purchased for $500.00
$6000.00 OBO
Hmm could'nt find it, found that ^ though. Maybe it's over on the IHR. Sho, yeah winter sucks, did'nt get much boating time last summer, seems like all I did was work on it.

Had 12 on it, worked well with some props, except the cleavers, down there in kentucky the 2 cleavers I had were pretty unpredictable, I got a good view of the sky twice and decided to leaave it be,went down to 4 1/2, but it's a total dog untill 85 , but handles real nice on top end. I have yet to find a happy medium, I just welded up a stationary 8 inch that I can add spacers to in 2 inch increments, I hope somewhere between 8 to 10 inches, plus the 2 inches that is in the merc mid will be about right. It'll be nice to spend a week or two in the warmth to dial this thing in so I don't have to mess around once spring comes here. My new probes for the digitron came today, the ecu needs a bit more tweaking, but I'm pretty close on it. I should be able to get outta here in 3 weeks, I need a sheet an a half of 1 inch composite board and then I can screw the deck back down and be good to go.
If i want to be able to pull a skiier up with mine AND run top end numbers, what set back is recommended? I run 12 now. Some say less some say more. Also, I know everyone has their preferences for props but what is a good top end prop? I run 1.86 l/u, will be spinning 7300 to 7500 revs safely this summer (fairly). 7800 or more is possible depending on my porting. I think I'm likely out of my powerband at 7500 though. Any ideas?
Capt.Insane-o
01-14-2004, 12:46 PM
I can get a skier up with a 26 chopper easily with 12, but usually use a torque shift for ski duties. For top end I have a 32 cleaver and 2 34's that were labbed. Merc wheels. 90% of the time there is a stocko 26 chopper that works the best for average lake use, excellent accelleration and picks the nose right up out of sharp corners, right Sean;) . Well, back out to shovel the drive again and a pontoon redeck for this evenings fun and games. The video we shot this fall is done, just have to sit down and figure out how to get a clip posted up here.

i think mid and upper 120s are very doable with this set up...gear case should help a bunch-- unless i'm just dead wrong....and it wouldn't be the first time that happened...instead of trying to make this thing turn up like a merc--we just need to bring everything down some...it will run 8000 to 8300 all day long...will be cool if it still goes 7500 to 8000 with 1.62s .............greg

You have done a freakin awesome job. You built the boat, then the motor (WOW). You stayed focused, you tried many variations, you experimented. You had highs and lows, you kept your nose to the grind stone...to repeat myself...IMPRESSIVE... Keep it up, that sled has 125 in it.....That I am sure of.
Keep up the excellent work and wear your Lid and Jacket.....

you too capt---believe me when i say it hurts to put mercury parts on there but i really think its gonna help a bunch....can't seem to get a decent gear ratio any other way...and i also think the sportmaster is stronger and faster than any other case out there...except the xr6 cases--may try one of those also--i like the size but can't afford the heavy duty guts for one....guess i could have used a yamaha case...1.70 ??i think but the sportmaster is stronger....we will see this weekend if i'm crazy or not...case will be here friday....already pulled mine off...................greg

Couple of things:
Ray Neudecker told me it's fairly easy to adapt the Yammi lower to the Johnny and have acces to I believe either three or four different gear ratios. (he is a wizard from way back if you did'nt know and I have his #)
Also, my local F-1 JohnRude budy says he heard the hot ticket is to use a Johnny V-4 Loop gear housing and stuff it with the old style Merc straight cut gears. (I believe from the in-line's??)
He say's being straight cut that they are stronger, and being "Non" bevel keeps them from pushing apart under load which is what destroys the V-4 housings with the standard V-6 gears on a V-6 motor.
You also get the 1" smaller torpedo of the 4. Have not been able to substantiate this one.
I agree with you on bringing/keeping the R's down on the motor too.
With the torque curve of the motor, more pitch at lower RPM may be equal to or greater than more RPM X less pitch??
Regardless, keep rockin brother!!
Gary
P.S., I have two virgin V-4 housings if interested.
RRRevinrude
01-15-2004, 07:24 AM
cool--i have a sweeeet v-4 case also w nose cone & v-6 shaft..would love to find gears for it...just the small diameter would help a lot....who do we contact to do something like that??
Raceman
01-15-2004, 08:30 AM
Gary, I don't believe the old inline gears will stand up to much horsepower. Steckbauer upgrades the gears in many of his XR6 housings to the V6 stuff with some machining so they'll fit.
Mercury made sold some modified inline cases for the V6's in the late 70's through Race Division. They were only offered with the 1.78 gears which were stronger than the 1972 and newer 2:1 gears and also received different heat treating. Although I didn't see a failure with em (there were only 1 or 2 of the gearcases bought around here) I was told that they were still somewhat prone to it and they were discontinued not long after. These were only run on the old 175's and 200's of the late 70's and far from the horsepower of today.

Greg, not sure?? Has just been hear say to this point.
I have also talked to a guy about an OPC class I'm considering getting invloved in and he thought he was onto something with gears on his own as well.
Trying to track him down.
Norris, not sure they were actually from the in-line motors. That was the guess from my buddy here in town.
All he stated as factual was "Merc, older gears, and straight cut".
But, I think that was second hand info to him as well.

The Eustis Drag race will be on the weekend of April 17. I will be making an announcement soon. The rules will be based on 2003 ODBA, with a few exceptions that wont affect much for the ODBA regulars who wish to attend. I will have a link to a site to download all the rules at the same time as I make the announcement, just have to get some ducks in a row
