Which is the best outboard hi-perf. magazine??????.
I´m subscriber of Hot Boat Magazine for more than 10 years.
It seem that during the last 6 months (or more), the articles about OUTBOARD HI-PERFORMANCE doesn´t appear any more. Therefore, that magazine (Hot Boat), does not shown my interest!!!!. Where is Mr. JOHN TIGER ????????.
Regards, Don (OUTBOARD HI-PERFORMANCE ADDICT!)

John Tiger now writes for "Family & Performance
Boating" Magazine. The articles are similar to
what he used to have in "Hot Boat". There website
is: www.familyandperformanceboating.com
Thanks

Hot Boat is falling into the same trap as Powerboat did, featuring megabuck beheamoths that only few can even dream of affording. The engine options on some of their test boats exceed the price of most people's entire rigs!! For my money, I could do without all of those boat tests eating up half of the magazine. I don't even read most of them anymore.

Hot Boat is doing the same as Power Boat did.
I am treating it the same, letting my subscription run out!!
Al Stoker now does the O/B tech article for HB, and for those of you that don't know Al, he is past national champion many times over in Mod VP back in the day. With an OMC no less!!
He cruises these boards from time to time as well.
My recent experience is that Bass and Walleye Boat Magazine is the best at OB tech articles. Have subscribed to them for several years and they're pretty good. I don't even fish!!
Family and Performance is good but I think, still trying to find their direction??
Very good one month, and just like HB the next???
The best was alway Power Boat back when Bob Nordskog ran the show.
Too much advertiser loyality these days.
Bob was'nt afarid to call a boat a pc of **** even if the manufacturer had an outside cover/full page ad!!
They knew it too. It was saying something to be picked out as a good boat by that magazine back then.

And they have "designers" do the boats.
Give me a break!
Buzz words -
Billet
powder coat.
Last I knew billet was something machined from a single block. No welds attached!

theres been quite a bit of talk about performance magazines lately on this board. maybe greg can set up part of this board for just that, an online magazine with tech articles, performance comparisons, prop tests, and such.we have 1000 dedicated outboarders here so it seems to me that different manufacturers would be happy to donate there products for tests. have some of the gurus that are on this board do how-to's. just an idea but i think this is a perfect place for one. if this cost a little more i'd pay. just so i can look at the type of articles that interest me and not a 42' fountain that my whole family couldn't afford. that's money well spent to me.before long at the rate this board is going there will be more member's on here than subscribe's to hot boat every month.

It would probably do PB and HB good to read this thread. Maybe we should send it to them, perhaps they'd be interested in hearing from some of their subscribers.

I have been giving some serious thought(if I really am capable of that) to starting a performance O/B magazine. I have a close friend who started a successful mag (15 years running!) from scratch and he is advising me on the directions I can take to get this thing going. Before I am able to get this puppy rolling I need two things.
#1 I need subscribers. This is where you come in. I need approximately 2000 subs before I put out the first issue. Circulation is the first hurdle to overcome. You can just about forget selling at the local 7-11. The large publishers have them wrapped up and they don't want competition. Subscriptions and word of mouth is how you get it started.
#2 Advertisers. Ads keep a magazine afloat. You sell ads by telling potential advertisers that I have so many subscribers spread out in so and so locales.
This would be a rag for the people buy the people. It would offer an affordable avenue for business and individuals alike to advertise their wares and services. It would feature botes that we are interested in. Tech articles from mild to wild.
I love this board and understand, I wouldn't be in competition with it. I can't take my puter to the toilet or work with me.
Now if you water rats are really interested in this drop me a line at
[email protected]. If I can show certain parties that there is a market(which I know there is) for a rag like this, we should be able to get it rolling before spring.
Everyone is encouraged to contribute their ideas for the direction you want this to take. Now let's see what happens.

I for one would be interested in subscribing to a new "good" High Performance boating magazine. Even if the price was higher than Hot Boat; which is of all the magazines I subscribe to; the most expensive. Just about every brand of antique tractor has their own magazine and seen to put out a lot of specific, useful information on a shoestring budget so I think it would be possible.
Articles like steering type discussions, nosecone tests, in depth hull and floor rebuilding with good photos, etc etc etc. The advertisers could be all the manufacturers we discuss daily here plus ones that would like to be discussed. I vote Yes.

Graybeard from Graybeard photography is putting a new mag out sometime next year, he had subscription forms at Smokin in the Cove this weekend but I can't find it. Maybe someone can post his email.

Psycho- If you are serious I think it would be worth taking a poll around to see if there are enough interested parties around (I mean subscribers as well as qualified writers) To make this work I think what you will need to do is fulfill a niche of information & entertainment that no one else is doing right now. As an example around 10 years I was into modifing small jap cars. Well the only mag you could really get back then usually pimped camaros and mustangs. But Sport compact car came along and started small (I had to get at a large bookstore). But I think the how to articles from little stuff like mufflers to full blow add a turbo really made the mag what it is today and can be found at many grocery stores. I find myself today looking for a mag around outboards and mods and generally about being an outboard wrench- just like 10 years I was thirsting for info about the best parts to buy and the most beneficial mods and how tos.
In short- I'd subscibe for a least a year...
However I would over look the trouble of continuously putting on articles modifying $15000 motors once a month. I hate imagine the amount of ass kissing it would take to convince Barney to loan out his 300X for little port grind test.

I've been talking with the guys at MCG publishing. Dave and Rob are good friends of mine. They started with a news letter and now put out one of the top Mopar mags. They have been at it 15 years now, They work hard 12 months a year. They will make over 25 car shows this year. 6 and 7 day work weeks are the norm during the show and race season. I've been going and seeking guidance from them. Dave is the business manager end of the company and he estimates that to come out swingin' with a quality mag pattered after theirs would require $150,000 to operate the first year. Now if your lucky and this thing catches on, you start balancing out after 6 months. That's if you have the subscriber base and advertisers. I counted 116 advertisers in their recent issue. Now consider that HotBoat had 68. MCG's publication is geared toward the mom and pop businesses and their ad rates reflect this.Subsciber ads are free and their business ads are probably half what the industry norm is. One reason folks buy the rag is for the ads. They are building and restoring cars and they know that this is the place to go to find that elusive part. Being a small independant publisher also gives them freedom to publish what they want. If my money tree starts to produce this is how I would like it done. I know there is a market for a bare knuckles O/B Performance mag, I just need to figger out the logistics. Any suggestions will be given consideration.
