ring locator peg, especially since it looks like a mid 90's model - replace all pistons with the new bomb style versions, they're much better

gives it away, I see some leakage in the head gasket also, saltwater is nasty.

so sounds like ronnies rite humm ring locator pin thats where the 2 ends of the rings meet rite? on the side of the piston?

I will never run another carb hi po motor, with what Tony has going with the svs and the pcu, us1 with the top pinning and all the other stuff availiable for merc's.......they are just more accessable, to me anyway, I've gotten tired with fuc^%ng around with a cranky motor, when it comes down to using my boat, I want to use it and enjoy the day, not screw around with some cranky ass outboard that has comprimises. I don't mind working on other peoples boats, but hate working on mine. The 2.5 merc is pretty well thought out these days and tough to beat.
To answer your other question, it would'nt take much to fix your motor, and be cheaper than a new one. It looks like she has some mileage, but can't tell all from pics. I'd bore all 6 and put some new slugs in it.

That would be about $480 or less, maybe less than a grand all told with machine work, gaskets, and all the other stuff you normally do in a rebuild. :cool:

well i already bought another power head its an older open deck that i bolted every thing to just to get the bote and motor outa my hair (which hasent happend yet)

i am just trying to get back some of the $900 i spent on the new power head thanks guys

rick where exactly are you in Kissimmee, Florida?

ill be there iin march was wondering if i could stop by and see a real shop

I closed my shop 2 weeks ago, we are running the website from home now. I took a job with a local tire store chain last January, and worked the shop in the evenings for almost a year. Recently, a friend that owns a tire store/garage here in town that I've known since I was 18 persuaded me to come to work for him, and move my shop to his place. The name of the place is Jeff Clay and Sons Inc.. I would still welcome a visit though. :cool:

I just do some some boat repairs in addition to my career as an automotive technician. That led me to seek out some better sources for marine parts, one thing led to another, now I sell lots of parts. The guys ya need to visit for that are Stoker (racer, OMC), Monty (not on the board, OMC) Diamond Racing (mostly Merc) John Marles (US1, Merc) Jay Smith (Merc) ( not meaning to leave anybody out, just naming some names for example ). I'm just a guy that can get you just about anything you need and save ya money doing it. :D :D :D I've been turning wrenches for over 26 years (ASE Master Tech), but mostly on cars, only been tinkering with boats for about 11. :cool:

Yes, that's correct. We closed my shop about 2 weeks ago. We drop ship about 95% of what we sell directly from the manufacturer or supplier anyway, so no big changes. :cool:

That's what happened, but there are all kinds of ways to protect or prevent it. All motors/pistons (make and brand) do it. We run a machine shop and see it daily.

I know someone on this site makes pistons modified to stop this, but short of that, stock applications suffer this because of excessive heat. In the case of your motor(OMC) there is a cooling modification that lowers the temperature on cylinders #2,#4 & #6 where the majority of these failures occur. #2 being the most common. I think you can read about the mod at www.mar-fab.com, Technical Bulletins. We do over a 100 of these a year.

My main reason for answering though is to coment on your putting an older open deck on your late model powerhead adapter plate. The late powerhead will work on the old adaptor, but you will have a major water leak with the older powerhead on the new midsection. You can build a dam that takes care of it, but you can't use it stock. FYI

i did see a water leak today on the motor..:eek:
the motor pisses like crazy and i have no thermostats in it so the motor barley hits 125*F on the head guage i mean the thing barly picks up off the pin... so i m not worried about the leak
the compression is all under 80-10psi.. im running it like nothing happend.. i dont give a F...
it runs 6200rpm only lost 400rpm for one down piston..... im gonna run it till i start gettin hit with chit..lol i know bad idea but i have a buyer and im gonna sell him the boat motor (another new power head) trailer.. im discusted!

im soo glad i didnt put this motor together cause if my first rebuild blows up i will fire bomb it in seconds;)

the only way to stop this is to change out the stock pistons??

Keep in mind that on OMC motors, pisser is before the powerhead. That means it "ONLY" indicates the water pump is pumping, not that the powerhead is getting cooling water. Merc is the other way around(hot water coming out pisser). I hear you on the run her till she blows chunks, but your powerheads are very rebuildable right now. That might not be the case after more internal damge occurs. Sleeving these motors is a snap. If not for the smell, you could almost do it in your own kitchen. Good luck.

P.S. In earlier years, yes the dow pin in the piston lined up with the finger port. Theory was that incoming fuel would keep that part of the piston the coolest. Apparently that ain't cool enough.

the whole motor needs to be oversized cause all the holes are stock and have ver low compression.. the 1994 block still has hone marks from the factory.... amazing even the blown hole has the marks ....

i know its dumb and im gonna regret it when i am lookin to get some money for the blocks but i dono im an idiot... i am selling the rig with another power head off a 225 rude... oh well...
