Hi guys a couple of days ago i rolled my boat in salt water and my 40hp mariner was underwater for about 10 minutes upside down. I pulled the killswitch out as it was going over so the motor wasn't running underwater. Tried to pull the motor over and it wouldent turn over as it was full of water. we pulled the spark plugs out and pumped the water out and also tipped fuel down the carbies to help flush the water out. Eventually we got the motor going again. When i got home i hosed the powerhead off after flushing the motor and have since sprayed it with wd40. Anything elise i should do to the motor? Have i done it any damage? Thanks again for your help.

well, it's good that you got it running, but you really should have gotten the water out and flushed it with diesel first. then tried to get it running. you need to keep running it. heavy on the oil and add marveys mystery oil to the fuel. the big thing you got to worrier about now are the bearnings. you need to be sure you get all the salt out of them and the only way short of ripping the block apart is to run the crap out of it. get it nice and hot. and use lots of oil! run a ratio like 25:1 that should handle it.

If it was electric start your starter and anything connected to the battery are going to go bad soon..I would go through all of the electrical connections and make sure they are dry and clean....

good point, flush that starter out with an electrical cleaner like CRC electic clean

run it.. Then run it some more.. When I do a motor I run it on the hose or if I can in the water for at least one hour then when I turn the boat back over to the owner I tell them to take it out and run it on the water if possible..
