Has anyone tried to put lower p/u in one of these? A racer I know told me that the skeg look really good for high performance.

I already have one to practice boring holes to the water pump....

Missed this one off of e bay...:(

Is that the "Lightning" gearcase? I always wondered how good they were...

Some of the Cobra outdrive lowers had large skegs and appear to be otherwise identical to the outboard cases. Putting a nose cone on one of those should be easier than attempting to add low water pickups to the "Lightning" case.

Lyle - Where did the 1.62 gears come from?

they were in it when i bought it its a duel pinion whatever that means never checked to see the ratio but it didn't like a 32 pitch prop 29 did better

Must be a Second Effort part and I didn't know about that ratio. I'm sure there are no parts available so take good care of it.

Wow, that is cool.... looks a lot smaller too.... Dual pinion? So I take it that it has not reverse? Against the rules where I am trying to go.... Cool part, though!

Thanks..:)

I agree it would be difficult to bore the holes, thanks for the idea.

Mine isn't very wide and I have had to trim it off some....trying to fix a handling problem. I guess I need to donate it to a bass boat and buy an other one.

I had Bob's nosecones put on 5 Lightning gearcases. Be sure to thru-bolt the carriers to the cases though!

I have no experence with the gearcase except for
the new bearing carrier. This new design carrier with
the wedge works really good. I have used the new
carrier in my gearcase for a number or hours with no
spinning problems.

The wedge ones are the ones I had. If you surface them for even an hour, they WILL spit out the wedges. It's happened 100% of the time on 5 different motors!

Wildman, sounds like you have some experence in
spinning these carriers, did you check wedge after
a few minutes of running to see if it was tight ?

WILDMAN

They don't spin, they just wallow as the props turn. I checked them every 15 minutes after the 1st one. They all did it, no matter what I tried. I've tried loc-tite, epoxy, everything. The rep told me he tried everything too. Bolting the carrier was the only way. He ran an HO on his Mirage.

Randy

Can you explain the orocess of how to bolt carrier. I am going to be running a 225 HO and I don,t want to have a problem.

Thanks for the info on the air cleaner mod.

Drill 2 1/4" holes through the case and through the carrier at the 2 and 8 o'clock positions. This will be an inch or so from the back of the case. Next, get two 1" x 1/4" phillips-oval head bolts. Countersink the holes so that the bolt heads are flush with the gearcase. Use a 1/4" nyloc nut on the inside of the carrier. You can get a 7/16 wrench up in there to hold the nut while you tighten it from the outside. This will keep the carrier from vibrating the wedge out if you surface drive the prop. Good luck!

Yeah you better "pin it"!Tap the holes through the gear case and carrier still use nuts.If you look at the Lightning gear housing you can see engineering spent alot of time on it,offset skeg, starboard side of the gear case near the skeg is flat etc.Have had some amazing resualts on bass boats running 80-90 mph tuorney loaded.1989 Stratos 201 pro (pig at 1660 dry hull wieght) unbolted a bobs case bolted one of these on and ended going WAY up onthe jack plate.Ended up 1/4" above the pad on a 8" jack plate for a gain of 6mpg and a two year old kid could drive it.

Wildman, how does the nosecone go over the "stinger" or point on the gearcase? I don't think the one that I am using would work. Looks like the stinger would hit the inside of the nosecone where the water passage is.

Thanks :)

I had Bob's do it. They've got a nosecone to fit it. It will cover up your speedo pickup though.

That housing was on ebay damn i missed it too what did it go for?Ive been looking for one and was thinking if its all solid up front maybe you could just drill all the passages the bobs cones are made solid and drilled pluged and cross drilled.Dave

It went for under $250:(

I am thiniking of boring at an angle to the height of the stock pickups and then boring horizontal to the passage of the pickups. Blocking off the horizontal hole with a plug and epoxy and go from there..... I am going to pickup the guinnea pig this weekend...

I was thinking of drilling all the way up but your idea Sounds better ,even if you had to make the passages on the outside at the factory intake level would be fine running the case at propshaft heights. maybe even make some solid aluminum covers milled out on the back side you could put on with screws instead of hoses.Let me know how it works out?Are you practicing on a dead case or a good one.Dave

It's dead... well the skeg is all f&^%ed up. I talked to my machinist last night and he said we would have to order some plunge mills....:p
