View Full Version : How thirsty is your motor!

Just wondering how much fuel everyone uses in a day out in their boat?
On an average day, say cruising about, a few passes, skiing and whatever you usualy do in your boat? I have heard devide HP by ten and you get fuel consumption, but this doesn't give an idea of total fuel consumption for the day.
Also what motor and boat do you have and what do you get up to on a day out?

I average about 27 gal for a day of playing. When I went down to the get together in FL last year, 2 days of playing I went through 56 gal. 2.4 200+
If I wanted gas milage I would have gotten a sail boat. LOL

my little 3cyl doesnt like gas very much lol. at the ROMP i did the damn run with all the other boats, its roughly a 40mile round trip.

i left with a full tank (13gallons)
i burned a little over a 1/4 on the way there
and another 1/4 on the way back.

so 6.5-7gallons in 40miles, full throttle 6000 almost the whole time. i think i get pretty good milage lol. to give you an idea on how long i was on the water that weekend i burned about 33gallons of gas  :D

No wonder you did so much more running than everyone else!

I usually use about 30 gal in a day and I probably spend more time drifting around than running.

I go thru a tank in about 10 minutes

Oh, yeah .... its a little tank---> 2 gallons

For most races we run 3 or 5 miles per heat (some short ones are 2) running 65-95 mph

In a single heat I usually use a little more than a gallon and add one gallon between heats. That way I usually have 2 or 3 quarts reserve.

I'm about 80hp, so the formula doesn't work out for my rig, does it? 12gph would be 120hp... I guess the extra 4 gph goes out as NOISE

Going by my GPS I have about a 60mile range on my 19gal tank..Thats with cruising at around 50-60mph with some 90mph here and there and sometimes alot of idling...It stays about the same regardless...

About 5/8 gal. per 1/4 mile pass, down and back and messin around for the start:D I don't think it likes to idle.;)

I great what I believe is great gas mileage. My average cruise [like across Lake George] is about 60-65 gps and my floscan meter says I'm I'm burning off 12 gph. I keep almost the same mpg from 40 up to wot [95] gps. I am running a 30" chopper II.
My 30 gal. inboard goes a long way.

My stock 90 hp Evinrude crossflow gets great mileage considering it's pushing a big 19' boat. The overall average is about 5 gallons per hour (ran 103 hours this summer on about 500 gallons). If you're just putzing around at a slow cruise or pulling inner tubers, it'll burn about 4. At wide open it burns about 7 or 8. It gets about 6+ miles per gallon when cruising, and I don't think the mpgs drop much at wide open. When I lived in Louisiana, I lived on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain and used to go across it to New Orleans and back on 8 gallons; that was over 50 miles of running. This summer I ran it from Waukegan Harbor all the way to Navy Pier in Chicago and back, hauling an extra passenger, coolers, extra gas, and cruising 40+ with intermittent wide open runs, and made it on 15 gallons. That was about 80 miles round trip, plus idling around in the harbor for about 45 minutes when we were downtown. Holeshots and no wake zones are what kill the actual miles per gallon. If you can get the boat on plane just once and hold a nice, steady cruise for your entire trip, it makes a difference.

You mean Gallons Per Mile. Did take a some what of a cruise once across lake George 2 years ago. It was 90 miles by GPS ( From where we started) used about 24 gallons at 85 plus when possible but not On lake George That day Just in the River. Across Lake George maybe 25 mph had about 2' to 3' footers and a nasty wind. But once in the River it was let it rip.
On my local lake I put in run to sand bar as fast as can be safely done and I would guess I get gallons per mile. Four miles and about 4 gallons :D :D :D nothing like it anywhere.

I have never thought to see what kind of mileage I get, I have a V8! I can't be good though, average day full boat 20 gallons, 3 - 5 gallon jerrys and it's gone at the end of the day:eek:

Now the second part of my question, how much do you pay for fuel? I was wondering how much it would cost to run one of these boats over here. I pay 85c a liter thats 3.57euro per US gallon. Just looking at the comparison, maybe it's time to move!!!

$1.51 here in Nebraska, when I was in Georga it was $1.15 a gal.
Yep time to move.

Hi,

1.12Euro/ltr. That's about $4.90 a gallon.

Suzuki 150EFI, I get about 4gal/hr at 22mph (wakeboardspeed)
WOT is only 42mph on this boat, burning about 17gal/hr.

Out here they are converting the 115hp and up 4stroke outboards to run on propane gas. ($1.66/gln)

Alan Power

That's interesting, I'm not crazy about 4strokes but at that cost for fuel it makes ya think! The engines are so expensive though. Who is converting the engines, what's involved? Is there a kit or is it a DIY job?
I don't know if I'd like a big pressurised cylinder in my boat though!

Gerben

Hi Alan,

A few companies over here modify engines to run on LPG (liquid propane gas). Some also offer a kit. Mostly the V-8 ski-boats are modified.
The LPG tank in itself doesn't worry me. I consider a fuel tank filled with 40gln of petrol at least as dangerous. Biggest problem is that LPG is heavier then air, so it would collect in the bilge. Might cause a nice explosion when attempting to start the motor. But then again that would aso be valid for petrol fumes.
Having a V-8 skiboat converted costs about 2000-3500 euro.

Here's one manufacturer:
http://www.lovatogas.com/eng/home.htm

And another:
http://www.iwemaenterprise.nl/Marine_index.htm

One company doing the coversionss. It's dutch, but quite a few pics. If link doesn't fully work, hit "LPG inbouw"
http://www.midlandwatersports.nl/home/lpg.html

Yeah, outboard prices are quite high. Was considering new motor for my ski-rig.
A 225hp 4st costs 21500euro.
A new Malibu sportster inboard is 28500euro including engine!
Came to the conclusion that I can't justify a new motor for my ski-boat.

Gas here is around 1.50 now. Was more this summer; near 2.00/gal. They hose you and crank it up .15-20+ every thurs day for the weekend, then the whole week on a holiday week. With the little 85hp I been running, I get a 6 gallon can and run a few times a day over the weekend. Sometimes I get another can, but I only run around the lake maybe 10-20min about 5 times on a weekend or less depending on how busy I am, weather, etc. I think it goes over 40 if I ever gps it. With my inline Merc I would get two 5 gallon cans and could run maybe a little longer on that than 6 in the 85hp. The 85 is a chryco force, not known for good mpg. I never timed it though, so I don't know how long/far it goes per gallon. Is kinda nice buying less gas, but it goes slower too. I can easily empty the 6 gal tank in maybe 3 hours just playing around, giving rides.

Sorry Dog

For me, a shorter prop cuts milage significantly.

With 2 mod V8's I used 90 gals on my 87 mile run...with my new 250 Fichts I only use 50 gals..same run..usually just cruising at 5000 rpms..either set of engines..I love to burn gas..

The oil companies mail me Christmas cards. I get 1/2 mile per gallon. I burn just under 150 gallons per hour at WOT. But WOT is seldom used, let alone for an hour. In flight oil tanker feeds two of these.

I don't know how far it was(Somebody help me on that) but I used close to 25 gallons one way. Somebody told me 40 miles? Is that right? Anyways good thing I still have stock heads and run 93 octane.

I get about 140 miles from 2 50 gallon tanks cruising at 60 to 70 mph. I ran 113 miles on a poker run doing 80 to 90 and finnished on fumes. Driving a cat sure beats the heck out of the mileage my power play V got. It would take nearly 150 gallons to do the same poker run at 65 flat out. Fuel on the water this summer averaged about .90 per litre cdn. Yes fillups smart a little but who cares really, its boating :)

28 US Gallons in 1.5 hrs...no matter how fast or slow I went....so you where better off to run faster and more efficient...at least you went further in that 1.5 hrs. It usually costed about 70 dollars (cdn) in fuel and 30 dollars (cdn) in oil.

So 1.5 hours of fun for 100 bucks

When that 1.5 hrs was over it usually went on the trailer.

The Rig was a 2.4 BP EFI powered STV

At the time I knew of no other merc Powered STV's that consumed as much fuel

Action 20 and I ran my stock 2.5 valero on lake champlain from mallots bay all the way to the locks in canada swinging a 29 pitch.
using the the gps to track our milage we pulled about 4 to 5 miles per gallon cruising between 65 and 75. If you can catch that lake when the wind isn't blowing don't pass up the chance to run it.:D

The Motion 25 with 2x260 costs about 570 usd to drive from Oslo to Lillesand thats a 330 km trip about 206 miles.
It costs 411 usd to run on full trottle in an hour......
But last week I had it on water I burned 4 jerry cans a day and was happy with that, about 16 gallons.
It costs 960 kr or 137 usd....
What is great with the boat is that its fun with 4 people and more to share the fuel cost.

I had decided to convert the 260s to propane at first and I do feel I know how to do it ,but the fuel cost was not as bad as I tought . the clue is to inject propane the same way as fuel in liquide form. gives 10 posent increase in hp !
In england they are running merc xr2s on propane ! even set a speed record with a cat running 2 x xr2s ! They clamed the engines runned much smoother and quiet on propane . the problem was to get enough heat to the gas heater/evaporator.

I read a advice ones given to a scottish guy , he was advised to have his hot boat in florida and fly over there and do his boating it would be cheeper :D

A summerhouse in Florida that would be nice !
If I get rich !
Maybe if i stop boating for 10 years ....and save all my money...

Is there a big difference in fuel consuption between a fish v6 and a 260 ?

Markus
12-07-2003, 11:35 AM
I have an ex-offshore racer friend who claims that the difference between an EFI and a fishing motor is huge, but I have never seen the number.

My EFI is not bad at all compared to my modified Yamahas, but on the other hand, I never got the jetting right on those.

I spend a lot more money on engines and parts than on fuel anyway...

Hi!

When I look at tests of the Promax 300 in magazines it is rated to use 13 gallons an hour at 4.000 hrs, and 18 gallons at 4.500 rpms.

In real world it uses more, more like 20 gallons at 4.000 rpms. At 4.000 rpms I run 52 mph with my ol' Phantom 25. At 4.500 rpms I run 60 mph. Great fuel milage, but Norwegian prices are not that favourable.

Last summer I consumed approx. 7 tonn with fuel..... 98 RON

They will have to expand the Mongstad refinery once you get 2 engines to feed. :D :D :D

80%less fuel consumtion on idle.
and maybe 2 foils in the tunnel for low speed effichency.
