I have spoken to Wayne Taylor some time ago, about the load handelling of the sport master gearbox, and amongst other things he mentioned something about fitting a remote oil tank.

Has anybody done this modification? And If so, where do you pick up and dump from, and how? The idea makes sense on paper, but does it make a difference in real life?

Your experience would be greately appreciated.

Orlando

He might be talking about the type used on the speedmasters. Mercruiser used them on there outdrives also. this type of oil reserve doesn't move the oil. I think they help keep the pressure down from heat thus saving your seals. If your case does start losing oil it will show on the oil bottle. With the SSM they help keep the top spur gears and bearings running in oil all the time. Here's my XS with one, I use it with all my gearcases including the stock 2 to 1 case. The little fitting at the gearcase wasn't cheap everything else I had. Mercury was still building the kits but of course there not cheap .

That looks to be, from the photo, a 1/4 bspt thread with a elbow fitting connected to a hose. The whole thing seems very symple and effective. It must also make for a quick oil change, specially during a race meeting.

Thanks for the info, and by the way, that is a very nice rig.:)

The hose is a small trim line from a inline six , I think it's a #4 hyd. fitting. The small brass fitting that replaces the vent screw is a merc part and this is the # 22-848104A 1. I think I got it from Doller Offshore for 60.00 . I like having it on there, Before I take my boat out for a run I always check the engine over and at a glance I can see if my oil level has changed or if the color doesn't look right.

I want one, since I put my 300 on the Skater, I think with the higher surfacing heights, my gearcase is running hotter, thus I'm going through seals sooner.

use 3/8"-16 straight threads for the fill and drain.;)

That brass fitting that Merc sells is 3/8-16 male with a O-ring and I think it a #4 flared female on the other. I think Seebold used to sell the kits the best I could do on the brass fitting was Doller or Doug Russell . The bottles show up on ebay all the time and the line is for a stock inline trim system. The mercruiser bottle that I have on the XS even has a float switch in it to tell you if your oil is running out.

Bruce, That same guy has a 100 OEM mercruiser ones also. I don't think the little fitting that they use on SSM's comes with mercruiser kits but all the parts needed are easy to find.
