need to know what type of solenoid to use for my trim motor. if im not mistaken it had what appears to be a starter solenoid. none was here when i bought the boat and i noticed that it trims up slower the longer the wires to the swiches are.( back of boat switch trims faster than switch on bow) can i use just any old ford starter solenoid? thanks guys! mt

If its a 3 wire motor you can use it, but a marine solenoid is usally sealed better and has copper terminals.Dave

Yea, it is used for up only. You can use a Ford cylinoid.

The relay may look similar to the Ford product, but it is laying flat. It also has a pole for a ground. The Ford starter relay has to be grounded, as if it was screwed on to the inner fender.

NAPA use to carry some boat motor parts. It would probably cheaper than a dealership.

If it does not have a relay, it needs one and your switches and wires will not receive the amp load that they are now and the system as a whole will last longer.

The solenoid is p/n 581528 and was still shown in the 2002 Bombardier book for $29.95. They also use a case to mount and protect everything. If you don't have that, you could ask a dealer to look in their junkpile.

I have done it. I really don't think it make that much difference b/c it is not really under a load.
